I have been cutting my own jelly rolls, or at least 2 1/2 inch strips, out of the fabric in my closet. Any ideas how to make my quilt. I talked to aussiequilter about a strip quilt or a friendship quilt. These are all scraps from the elderly lady that doesn't quilt anymore. I tried rolling them up, to get out of the way, like the jelly rolls. They may not look even, but they are, at least the 2 1/2 is even. Some of my strips aren't the WOF. I am not good at placing either. There will be so many. If I do the strip from side to side, do I keep my colors together, like all purples, then move on to another color? or mix them up?? The friendship chevron like aussiequilter did, may work better???? Any ideas Cuties? I appreciate your thoughts-Toogie

You will probably think I am completely crazy but here's what I think would be fun and I'd paobably do it::When you have several jelly rolls plan a jelly roll party. Invite some friends over for coffee or tea and serve real jelly rolls. Then give them each a quilt jelly roll and challange them to make a quilt for some charity, hospital, childrens group, etcWhat ever is dear to your heart.. You could set a time, say 1 month that everyone would bring back completed quilt. You could go as a group to deliver them then go out for coffee or lunch. Since yor were gifted the fabric it would be nice to play it forward. All you would have in it is your labor. If there were enough larger pieces you could even give them the backing. The jelly roll race really makes up fast and looks more complicated than it is. I have even used my serger to put the strips together and that takes just a couple of hours and if you "envelope" the top & backing (no binding) it that makes it even faster.

Your idea sounds like a nice thing to do, and the quilts we make for our church group are not the envelope quilts, just roll over binding from the back. No piecing, just whole fabric, front and back.

There are a lot of tutorials on Missouri Star Quilt Co. Search jelly roll quilts will get quite a few patterns.

I love to look there and she has some good short cuts a lot of times. I tried some of her blocks for Avery's bibs. Take a look in my projects page.

This is the link to aussiequilters Friendship Braid quilt. I think that is what it is called. She used a lot of different scrap pieces and isn't it pretty? Is this what you meant, Ihart?

Take a look at making a French Braid quilt using the strips they turn out beautiful with scraps. Lots of different styles available. I would give you a flower but I can't find out how to do it.

I think the french braid may be the same as the friendship braid quilt, that aussiequilter quilted. She has it posted here on cute. I will try to bring it up for you to see, if I can. You can tell me if this is what you mean.....To give anyone a flower, look where the flower is on the right of their post, and just click it. That's all there is to it. I just gave you one here. It adds to your total under your name/avatar. Also, to see what a person has been making, if you click on for instance toogie by my photo it will come up to my post page. Then click where it says projects. I do this if I especially like something someone has made. I like to see what else they made..... Thanks for looking..now if I can add the photo or link of aussiequilters. I don't see where I can put it here so I'll either edit or add another comment for you to see.

very dedicated I must say, it's probably what most of us should do with some of the unused stash (me, anyway). The Jelly Roll Race (on You Tube) is probably the quickest. Have a bit of look at the ones they have in Patchwork shops. They mix the colours, but still in some 'light, medium, dark' scheme. You have to cut some off the first bit, before doing the long length. But if you have differing lengths, this may not be necessary. One day, you will show us I'm hoping??

When I do something I will show and tell, or if it is a huge flop, you will be able to see what NOT to do.

A flop!! I very much doubt it Toogie. Whatever you make will look beautiful

Love this tutorial, the look is very scrappy and it is not difficult. The only problem is, you sew in the bias, so you must be careful, dont stretch. I use my normal ruler and make for the right triangle a mark with painters tape. The quilt I made this way was a gift years ago as I was not a member of Cute, so I have no foto.

It looks like where you join the strips are in the bias, but that shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for the link.

Sorry I have no suggestions as I am not a quilter. I am sure you will come up with something that will be just right. Best of luck. Looking forward to seeing the finished quilt. By the way great idea to cut your own strips. Hugs Shirley

I was just thinking I needed to do 'something' with the fabrics. I have more in huge bins. Also, I couldn't find some of my own fabric a couple weeks ago, that I knew I should have, to make Avery's monogrammed jeans. I had to move more bins to get to it, so I said then I need to cut down this stash. It seems a shame to cut a big piece into strips, but whats the use to save it, when I have so much. They sure knew who to give it to-lol

Bev is right, this works really well & I have done this a few times to make quilts in a hurry. You take all the strips you need to make a lap quilt & put them into a paper bag & start sewing them together @ the short ends until you have stitched them all & have one giant strip. Then you take that strip & right sides together fold in half lengthwise & cut @ the bottom of that & then stitch those sides together & just keep going until you have sewn 8 rows & you will have a finished lap quilt. I watched these and look for more, in between cutting. I could use my whole time up, just watching these quilt videos-lol -They use the jelly rolls that all match/coordinate. Mine will be hodge-podge or this and that pieces. That why I this sometimes the friendship braid would maybe look better???? It would be just short pieces and maybe more scattered all over. ...I may just end up with a big mess!

Put your strips in a paper bag, give it a shake and pull one out, What you see is what you sew.

I made a few crib size quilts before, so start with one that size. You can do it on your sewing machine. I did 2 queen size quilts, last year on mine, and that was my first time to make any that large.
