Here is a picture of it
I looked and see you have been making them for awhile, I'm always behind. LOL!
On Dec 31st one of my granddaughters gave birth to her first child, full term, beautiful in every way, but still. I had been working on a rag quilt for him and I had finished all but the label. I was waiting for his name. I finished the quilt the day he was born and the label says "In loving memory". My granddaughter has been sleeping with it since then. It warms my heart to know that it gives her some small measure of comfort.
I understand complete. I see where she gets her comfort. Sometimes we never know what a quilt can do. Bless you and her. I know the pain.
SE corner, on the Mississippi. Winona county.(what is locally referred to as the Miami of Minnesota because the river valley and the bluffs protect us from some of the weather extremes that other parts of the state get.) I visited Bemidji a few years ago when my sister and I did an Explore Minnesota road trip. I have a daughter who lives in Eveleth which isn't very far from you.
I have not been to that area of the state. I do know its beautiful, maybe this summer. Take care. God Bless!
He is sure to always treasure your gift. So glad he is doing well after his surgery.
mlbell70- A rag quilt is named "Rag" as the seams are showing and you then snip the seam allowance down close to the seam stitching just not through those stitches. Once the quilt is washed a few times the snipped edges fluff. Some people use polar fleece on one side and flannels or cottons on the other or 3 layers of flannel with the middle layer barely seen as you would only just see a bit of it in the snipped edges but is another way to add just a bit of an accent color. You do not have any batting and quilt as you go, so the quilt can be completed very rapidly. There are many examples on U tube and just about every quilt site. There then comes the personal choices of just how we wish to make our version of rag quilt and the nice thing is that the style is very forgiving for those who are new to quilting or not as exact as you need to be when creating a pieced quilt with 1/4 inch seams throughout.
Hope you give one a try as they make quick and easy baby quilts or lap throws. I have also made a large Queen sized rag edge quilt for our daughter when she first moved out on her own. I had just gotten my Designer SE and used the project to learn the basics of my new hobby. I used various corduroys with embroidery stitched on them and flannel on the other side that would have the seams showing and fringed. For the embroidery I stitched on every other block and as a way of having my husband and I still wrapped around our daughter though she was far away at the time. I chose Favorite bible passages of mine and my husbands, our favorite hymns, quotes with personal meaning. I used all the different lettering and created frames around some of the lettering and just had fun adding little bits of one design or another. This allowed me enough repetition I hope I will always remember the basics of my machine. I know our daughter treasures that she will always have that special bit of us stitched into a quilt she can wrap around herself and her parents love hug her back.
I did put batting in mine, hence the x sewen across the squares. I made it 2" small then the squares.
I really appreciate your detailed explanation, like your idea of using the bible verses and personal favorites - makes it such a personal keepsake. Thank You, Mary Lou
Well perfect colours for a man. He is sure to appreciate your kindness. Marian
there is such joy in giving just because you can and especially so when your heart and prayers go into something you have made for one person.
