For everyone inspired by Chris, Polly and me, here are the Instructions for making the machine organiser.

We just cut two pieces of fabric 23" square (make sure it is wide enough so that your machine sits squarely on it)

one piece of wadding 23" x 11" to insert into the top section where the machine sits

a piece of contrast fabric 23" x 11" folded over
lengthwise making a strip 5 & 1/2 inches by 23" (for the pocket section)

one piece of wadding 23" by 5 & 1/2 inches to stiffen the pocket section

Step one, prepare the pocket section by folding over lengthwise, marking where you want the pockets.
(make one pocket slightly wider than the other three, this is for dropping threads into). Now would be the time to embroider designs onto each pocket section.

Insert the wadding and stitch it onto the right side of the main front piece at the place where you marked the pockets.

Turn the front over to the wrong side and pin the (23x11") machine base wadding to the wrong side.

With the main front right side facing you, pin the backing to the front, right sides together and stitch a 1/2 " seam all the way around the whole square Leaving a four to six inch opening in one side, (between where the machine base lining ends and the top of where the pocket section starts).

Turn organiser right side out, finish off the opening then run a topstitch, 1/2 inch from the edge, all the way around.

Sounds more complicated than it is but I can tell you, once you have a sewing organiser under your machine, you will wonder how you ever lived without it.

No it's really easy Jerrilyn, just need the measurements to suit your machine and then think it out. :-)

if you make the pocket section three inches wider you can then gather the excess at the bottom to make a gusett. cut a strip of plastic about half inch wide and the length of the width of the wide pocket. make a hem at the top of the pocket that the strip can be threaded through. then sew as normal securing the plastic strip so that it bends outwards to make a bucket type pocket. I use cheap plastic cutting mats to make the strips. you can get several from one mat. this way the thread can be popped in with ease.

Yes we had thought of doing that but decided a wider pocket was just as useful and a lot less complicated to make, seeing as we were keeping it simple to encourage ourselves to actually make them. LOL!!! hugs n love, M
