Have you seen those Vera Bradley hipster bags? Well,I am trying to make a bag like theirs.I was doing fairly well,or so I thought, until ... .Look at the front and tell me if you notice my mistake...I know I won't be satisfied until I rip,and re-sew,but it won't be tonight.I have another question after you look.

Toogie, I couldn't see it on the open zipper, only on the closed zipper and only when you pointed it out! There are Unlicensed Vera patterns for sale on the internet. You ALWAYS do such nice work!

I didn't use a pattern, but VB gives the dementions of her bag.I made mine wider at the bottom and tried/guess at the pocket placements and size.Inside pockets were made to suit ME.I ripped & re-sewed,so all is well.Thanks-T

I just further down, and saw that your bottom wasn't sewn in yet....trim the bottom of the bag the 1/4 in (fold it in first to make sure this trick will work) the bag should set straight then...don't take the zipper out!

toogie by toogie 27 Mar 2014

The pocket would have set straight, but then my bag would have been off.I ripped and resewed, wasn't as hard as I thought, because I didn't disturb the zipper.Read other comments. Thanks for yours-Toogie

I agree with everyone else, it is beautiful, I would not disturb anything. Let people think it is a design element. There is so much wonderful work, it would be a shame to take the chance that you could upset everything. Count it as a learning tool. It is beautiful just the way it is!

This is a beautiful bag & I would NOT undo it. Add a button, flower, etc, but it really looks great as it is. I really like that material.

You did great. Next time make the pocket really crooked. I think the idea of placing a flower or bow is the best. Do not rip out!!!!

If you are making this bag to be judged then go to the trouble of fixing it or make another, otherwise just enjoy it. Once you put things in the bag and carry it, no one will notice unless you point it out.

I am the judge, jury, etc. and pity, but when it comes to my sewing,I guess I am strict on myself.I know it can be fixed and I wouldn't have been satisfied. Now when it comes to other things, or people,I am not so judgemental.I am what some would say,my own worse critic.

Toogie, 1/4 inch is NOT worth taking it apart to redo! Look at all your friends here guessing all kinds of stuff, but NOT guessing the zipper being a little off. It might look cute to make a little bow or covered button and add it to the lower side. That would take your eye off the little teeny tiny error. It looks GREAT just the way it is! You are being way too critical of your work! Enjoy! Make another sometime, cos you are sure to get so many compliments on this one! *flowers to all*

It is beautiful!!! I like it as it is, I would be afraid, how about you, how brave are you? lol! You have done an amazing bag, no question about it and you will get tons of compliments. If you tear it apart it could weaken it as you have sewn it in well. Bags will be worn in a year or so, and it will be forgotten.

But 'I' would know-That is why I could only hem 3hundred and some odd pair of hem legs a day at the sewing factory, just never made it to 400 pair a day, because they said I was 'too picky'.Company didn't care if it wasn't right, just sew it went out....That might be why the plant was shut down, poor quality...sigh...if they would just have taken my lead and listened to me....lol

Now that a few have guessed right, what to do? I don't mind ripping but when I sewed it in,I cut the zipper, like we do ITH projects. If I do rip it out, will my zipper come apart,is the second question????If so, then the whole pocket will have to be remade. Has anyone ever ripped out after it was cut?????

mops by mops 27 Mar 2014

Stitch across the zipper end before you rip it out and it should be OK, I shorten zips a lot that way. But are you really going to take it out. That seems such a shame.

I did-look at your other reply here.

Love it Toogie, what ever it is it will stickout like dogs b**** to you. If your really unhappy with it then start again or turn it into a feature..

toogie by toogie 27 Mar 2014

Now turning it into a feature is an idea.I wonder if I could add a little flat flower or something on the left,so the right won't show that it is 1/4 inch higher!

Great idea

The pocket trim is different top and bottom, the horizontal stitching lines are only on the top part, but that could be on purpose. In the picture is looks as if the zipper is set in at a slight angle - might be due to the way the photo is taken.
The bag looks great!

toogie by toogie 27 Mar 2014

That horizonal stitching is on purpose, that's how hers were. Why the zip looks like that is because the pocket on the right side is 1/4 in higher.

mops by mops 27 Mar 2014

I see, the slight angle. It would have been a nice feature if the slant were greater.

toogie by toogie 27 Mar 2014

I agree, and have ripped and resewn.I did as you suggested and whipped stitched,as we call it, around the zipper, where it goes under the trim.I only had to rip the trim on the edge by the pocket,as the pocket edge went up to, but not under the trim, stitched on the outer side.Wasn't nearly as much trouble as I thought it would be.And of course,I do have a good magnifying lamp for ripping-lol-I know I would not be satisfied until I ripped it,as was a tiring day yesterday,I just didn't want it to end up a UFO.

ok Toogie, I looked and enlarged and looked again and again... I can't find what is wrong! I am impressed with how well you matched up the fabric pattern. It looks Beautiful, and I think you are being too critical of your work! Love the fabric you used for inside the pocket and the piping too. I think you did a magnificent job! Hope you post a pic when you get done! and tell us what you think is wrong :) *Flowers*

In the middle pic, the pocket looks a little crooked, maybe just the picture angle. Sure is pretty and if it isn't crooked I can't imagine what else is wrong.

Ms Toogie, I see nothing wrong with it...but to you it is glaringly obvious no doubt. Oh wait...you didn't sew any straps to the front or else you sewed them down as the trim for the pocket. ?!? Either way it's still very nice and I love the zipper smile! Instead of taking it all apart, could you make it unique and just take apart enough to add some fabric straps...if you have any of this fabric left; no one will be any wiser unless you clued them in? That's just a thought...less work and really unique. :P Leaha

toogie by toogie 26 Mar 2014

That's not it either.Google Vera Bradley hipster bags, the trim on the front is similar to this.I haven't got the straps/handles made yet and I also don't have the bottom on yet, but that's not what I thought you would notice.I'll wait a little longer, then I'll clue you in.

Leaha by Leaha 27 Mar 2014

Since I'm not a purse aficionado, shows you how much I pay attention to such things...LOL. I still think it's perfect as is but know you've already rectified the matter as once something is obvious to the 'chief critic' it ruins things unless fixed. I'm the same way only I'm trying to cut myself a little more slack...don't ask if it's working? LOL
