Just a warning. Second time Norton has blocked an attack about needed to "clean up" a virus on my site. Looks like that's making the rounds again. For those that are't aware, please do NOT click on that window! It came up a minute ago here on Cute.

Bringing this ttt one more time. Hopefully everyone will have seen it by now. I still don't have ads along the side of my screen on this site...which i do not miss at all! :-)

Just got that Norton blocked it again. It's still out there & Norton marked it as a "severe" threat.

Thank you Gerry for the warning. It is wonderful that you look out for other Cuties.

Use these online programs (they all require permission to download some files) or download programs (like Malwarebytes) All are free scanners. Do NOT download the "Free Trials" as it is not necessary and if your computer is infected it may not work. None of the free scanners run without your permission. Malwarebytes can remain on your machine and be run manually (I use it once per week in addition to my Kaspersky). You should never have two (or more) automatic -- running antivirus programs on one machine at the same time. Antivirus programs are like toddlers or teenagers fighting over the same toys if they run at the same time on one computer.
Plug in any USB's you have to allow them to be scanned as well as all harddrives. Some scans take a long time. Be sure to run FULL scans and include serching for naughty software included in the Eset scan.
Good luck!

I don't usually click on the adds, but there are times I do by accident - sometimes without knowing that I have. Other times I am trying to find the freebies and I click on the ad thinking it will get me where I need to go. So far by anti-virus has not given me a warning, but now you have me really concerned that I may do something by accident and be in trouble.

If I download to a disc backup and if I have a virus will it go to the disc also and then go back to my laptop when I re-load it? Thanks for you help.

Yes, if one machine has a virus then using a USB drive or a backup from a CD can infect the second machine.
I can post some links to SAFE online free scanners. They are reputable companies.

rescuer by rescuer 01 Aug 2012

The online scanners will not interfere with your regular anti-virus program.

I notice there are no ads on the side here right now. Because of the virus trying to get thru with the ads? Sure hope they stop that thing! Please read all the comments below so you will be up to date on this one.

I looked to see what ad MacAfee blocked, and it's from Google, for the Nexus phone. Now, how does that happen, it's Google, shouldn't they know?

rescuer by rescuer 31 Jul 2012

One would think they would know...but some of those malware/virus things hide better than expected.

I have my anti-virus software blocking all "banner ads" right now. If you have the ability to do that, it would help prevent infection until the advertiser is cleaned up or an internet provider identifies and removes the ad. Be aware many places require the user to allow ads and you may have trouble using those sites when you block banner ads.
I am sure it will be resolved soon. There is no safe way for Cute to determine which ad is infected. The internet service provider of the ad will detect internet usage consistent with a virus or trojan and they will handle it.
Safe surfing Cuties and remember to back-up all your important computer data. Virus infections can make it difficult/expensive to access your data...Often with serious virus or trojan infections a drive must be wiped and reloaded. In those cases ALL data on the drive is lost.

This is a screen shot of the warning from my MacAfee on almost every page of Cute I bring up now. It's certainly blocking something, I don't know if it's the virus you're talking about or not. But I've not gotten this kind of warning except a few times, now today it's coming up more and more, now on just about every Cute page. Usually one of the ads is "X'ed" out, grey, or just not there at all. Anyway, do be careful what you click on, there's some kind of problem going on. I don't think it's Cute, but heaven knows what's in all those ad links, and Cute doesn't have any control over those. Be careful. Hugs, Marji

Please read rescuer's answers on this. She knows more than I do about computer, as you can see! But it popped up on 2 different sites, so don't think it was because of cute as my hubby sure wasn't on that site when it came up while he was on line!

LOL! Your husband MIGHT have a secret identity. lol

rescuer by rescuer 30 Jul 2012

Only on rare cases will a virus be IN a site instead of inside the advertisment ON the site.
If it is inside the site, it would be more consistent and we would all see it everytime we open the site.

Is there any specific page or location you are visiting that is causing this? I haven't seen anything yet, so will keep an eye out. Thank you for the heads-up.

As I think it is inside an advertisment, it will be random. This kind of thing can happen anywhere on the internet. Just remember NEVER click on it.

Keeping this ttt in case someone else has had the problem. Yes, it probably is in an ad.

Keep this ttt
This is a nasty virus that pops up and if you click on it at all it can load. Close the window or the internet. If that doesn't work use Task Manager to kill Internet Explorer.
I think it may be embedded in an advertisment. I hope Cute isn't infected! I had one two days ago while looking through the Freebies tab. I thought it was a coincidence as I always have more than one window open.
If you do not click it it does not load. So, you won't have the virus unless you click it.
Please make sure you update and run quality anti-virus programs.

My MacAfee has been giving me a black banner across the top the last few days, saying it's blocking suspicious content, and the ads don't show when it does this. Is this what you're talking about?

rescuer by rescuer 30 Jul 2012

No the actual virus will pop up in the center of the screen. You cannot (usually or easily) close the page. It is about 1-2 inches by 3-4 inches depending on your screen size etc.

marjialexa by marjialexa 30 Jul 2012

Ok, I haven't seen this, but I'll watch out for it. My HP computer tells me about updates, and I get updates from Java, but other than that, no.

momhome by momhome 01 Aug 2012

Do these seem to come out of nowhere and you may not realize they are there until you close some pages down?

rescuer by rescuer 01 Aug 2012

Yes, as the open page changes ads (even in the background behind other open pages) they will pop up usually it is like they are stuck to the page.
There are many varieties but they all look real. Except, some have poor sentence structure or misspelled words.

Thanks, Gerry! What exactly does the window say that we're not supposed to click on? I never go to any of those ads anyway, but some might. They're Google ads, and they come up depending on the text of the posts, they pick keywords from the posts & put up ads that relate. So is it an ad for a virus program, or what? Thanks again for the warning, hugs, Marji

It is a pop up window that looks official. About the size of the official Windows notifications.
