We had a very interesting demonstration at our J-club today. Ruth from Janome came to show us how all of the available sewing machine feet worked. I now have a wish list ready for Santa but I was disappointed that she didn't demonstrate any of the ones that came with my machine!

I suppose I'll have to consult the instruction book!
How many of your machine feet do you actually use?

Well, I've now tried the rolled hem foot, the overedge foot and the quarter inch foot. I think I'm going to like the last one!

What was useful about the last foot?

spendlove by spendlove 04 Oct 2015

The quarter inch one has a piece to follow the edge of the seam. Great for patchwork. It might make me more accurate.

I have a Diamond but I have found that some of the feet from previous machines can be used.(Janome 8000 ,Singer futura & Elna )
The feet that I use most are ;clear invisible zipper foot & a edge set of feet which I'm sure were not meant for what I use them for

The ones I have are still in the little bags they came in. Maybe I should check to see what they actually do or what they are.

With so many feet experts on the board, maybe we can get a thread going on how to use each one so the rest of us can learn too!!!!!

Have one foot only on my Embroidery and Overlocker (serger) machines.

I have two sewing machines and I use every foot that I have plus the collection in another container for my Husqvarna 770.

I change feet almost as often as I change the bobbin when sewing. I am very particular about matching the thread to the work and have two huge containers of thread as a result.

Finally learnt/figured out how to use the gathering foot to good effect.

Err Sue, didn't you know?! The demonstrator's job is to make you buy the feet that didn't come with the machine :-)

I do not like the circular sewing attachment. And you can make one out of cardboard and a thumb tack - see YouTube. Save $30-60, depending on your machine and where you live.

If I want a circle on something, I use my embroidery machine and the circle frame.

The demonstrator had been asked to use the feet from the machines. I think she did in an earlier session, but not the one I saw.

Ok lets see I use the embroidery foot of course the straight foot the decorative foot, free motion quilting foot, the quilting foot, the ruffler foot ( I use this one a lot for the ruffle on towels) the skinny ribbon foot (really neat) zipper foot, the one for rolled hems, button hole foot, & that's all I can remember now. But I do like to learn new ways to do things & using the right foot for the job makes it so much neater. Experiment Sue they are fun. ~hugs~

I am so impressed.

I like the ruffler foot but it is expensive so I use the one ,on my 1929 Singer treadle ,still works but is probably slower.

I have to learn how to hit the "Submit" button. Made up the list this morning, then read Jrob's message, laughed and forgot all about it. OK now lets try it again. Embroidery of course, 1/4" for quilting, free motion. and walking foot, tried the bias binding and failed miserably so still finish by hand. Used recently the pin tuck foot, but doubt I will use it very often.

The thing with the submit button happens to me all the time!

Patricia109 by Patricia109 01 Oct 2015

I did it again!
I frequently hit the "Cancel" button instead!
Very frustrating. Should remember GREEN is for GO.

Hello, I used most of my foot since I started to work in the sewing shop(Banbury). But my favorite of all, is my adjustable bias binding foot when it is on a straight seam, I looooove it !

I saw that one demonstrated, but it couldn't do corners so I won't be adding it to my list!

My favorite has always been the edge stitch foot , Bernina #10. Don't know what it is on your machine. Kay

I've used my coated foot, zipper foot, utility foot (mostly the clear one), the sensor buttonhole foot, the edging foot, and of course the embroidery foot. I haven't used the side motion foot, the quilters 1/4" foot, the blind hem foot, the regular buttonhole foot or the utility foot with a tunnel underneath. I also purchase a dual feed (walking) foot which I've used, but it came with 2 other feet that I have not yet.used: another quilters 1/4" foot (this one is clear and has a fabric guide) and some sort of quilting foot that has a spring on the shaft and the foot is shaped like a "C". I'm obviously going to have investigate how to use some of these feet, especially since I hope to do some quilting. Thanks for raising this subject and getting my thinking out of the old rut.

The quilting foot with the spring and shaped like a C is for free motion quilting.

Thanks for the info crafter2243, it looks like it could be fun to try.

lI have a ridiculous number of feet (sounds as if I were a millipede) as they all promiss to be timesavers. I have used all of them at least a couple of times, but my "can't do without" favourites are the edge stitching one for sewing perfectly spaced topstitching; the open toe stippling foot, the piping foot and the embroidery foot that works well for free hand enbroidery and machine quilting as well.

What I used only once or twice is a foot designed to sew on a chain of pearls or beads; and I am not a fan of the one cm seam foot (it is seldom doing the intended 10 mm, operator error no doubt) or the bias binding foot, I'd rather sew that the old-fashioned way.

She used the beading foot which looked great, but I'm not a big fan of bling. I may go for the ribbon one though. (It does sequins as well for if I feel the need!)

Maybe that should be each of our challenges to use all the feet we currently have and try to use them all on a project. Let's see... Zipper foot, teflon for sewing leather and vinyl plus couching on some embellishments or adding some FSL onto a garment, could really make an interesting project. I can really see the potential in unleashing one's creativity especially in something like a recycled jean jacket or blazer jacket. Then add a few of the items also to a pair of jeans or skirt and oh my what a showpiece could be created!

The feet I generally use are the Embroidery foot, 1/4" foot and the basic straight stitch/ZigZag in the clear foot style are the ones I use most, (the metal foot I rarely ever use). I also occasionally use the zipper foot, button hole attachment and teflon feet. I then have 4 or 5 more that I have never used. It would be good just to try them each out and see if maybe if I could use them in creative new ways, maybe combined with some of those stitches I never use also. I hope someone will take up the challenge and show us the results. It could be a fun project. Pam

From my Janome MC 11000SE I use the most feets. The most I use the patchwork foot, the zigzag foot und the zipper foot. I use the applique foot for decorative stitches and the special foot for free motion quilting, for sewing leather and difficult material I have a teflon foot.
