Hi Cuties, I was wondering if any of you have used foam, under your satin stitch monograms, to make them 'puff'. If so, can you use the foam sheets at Walmart ? What font design have you used? Some sites have 3-D Puffy fonts, but someone said, just so you use a satin stitched font. I think it would work on a font, like the letter Meganne provided, for my napkins. Anybody tried this?

The puffy foam from craft stores or Wal-Mart works just fine...the only thing you should watch out for is a wide satin stitch area...the sides of the satin stitch where the needle hits back and forth is not the problem...it is at the bottom where there are not any needle points to cut the foam...then when you tear it away...it isn't cut in those areas...digitizers usually "seed" the areas with a zig-zag type manual punch stitch under the satin stitching to cut the foam in those areas. Just be aware of this when you choose your designs...Also, it helps to choose a color of foam that matches your embroidery thread..that way if there are any pesky points where the foam shows...it is the same color as the embroidery thread...

Hot water leaks and shooting armadillos, it is a busy, busy family/house you are living in! Glad you waited for help with the hat clipboard idea, until you do have help, as no.... we do not want a knife oops to happen. Thank You for the craft foam confirmation that it works great, instead of the higher priced embroidery foam, especially since craft foam is available in so many colors and cheap too. Love it when we can find less expensive materials, that do the same thing. Sometimes the more expensive product is needed but does not seem so with this product. Thanks again and hope your hat clipboard project will happen soon also. Pam

Papa had a busy day yesterday, for sure. For a 'retired' man he 'worked' on a water well first. His brother drills water wells, or he used too, he just services them now. I should say my husband services them for him-lol-BIL is semi-retired at 87! They do both commercial (flower nurseries & residential) wells. He just got home from there and went to kids house to fix hot water tank leak. Got home from there, just came in the house and one called us to go eat out. Brought Nora home with us, had to stop and get her milk at the Walmart/grocery and was driving up to house and saw 2 armadillos in the yard. Nora HAD been about asleep on the drive back, but the excitement of Papa shooting armadillos had her wide awake again!-lol-I have my clipboard marked this morning and BIL called for hubby to go work on a commercial well! and I bought Nora a cap last night.

Toogie the most we have had in the garden is cows. What do armadillos do to ones land?

They dig holes all over the yard and under the steps. It's looks like someone went through with a tiller.

I haven't used the foam sheets for monogramming but did try to embroider. ....works pretty well!
I had posted a pin cushion I made with my test square...have added the link below!
I dont know what the 3D puffy foam is like comparatively...but I think the regular craft foam would work well too with satin stitch monograms!

I think the reason it is called '3D puffy fonts' is because when you stitch the font design, over the foam, it puffs it up to look 3D. Thanks for your information on these sheets. The pin cushion looks nice.

Wow, I can really give experienced advice on this question. YES, the 2mm or 3mm craft foam you can get a Wal-Mart or any craft store works great. I have used the free puffy foam alpha and dolphin at Apex designs. I have some other designs to try to see if it works. The satin stitches are all you need with no underlying or extra top stitching after you put the foam down. I use the color of foam to match my thread. After you stitch, the foam rips away easier than tear away. Any little pieces of foam left can be tucked in with a needle. Hope this helps.

PS Yes it is washable and dryable but do not iron the foam, it melts.

i have seen the foam advertised on web sites. Have you seen these old veterans wearing hats that they buy at the VA hospitals. I think the letters are done with puffy foam. emblibrary may have the font. I remember seeing it from somewhere. Kay

It's just foam sheets,I am talking about. when you stitch over the foam that is placed on the outside of the hat, it makes your stitches puff up.

Don't know about the puffy sheets for monograms but use craft foam from craft section for the note pad holders. It had a satin stitch right around and 2 long button hole shapes in the centre which you cut open. All stitched perfectly machine never skipped a beat. I would do a test run on something like this to see if that is what you want.

No but its on the list of something to try one day, which is of no help at all to you at the moment. But I understand that a satin stich works well

Do you think the 'emb foam sheet' is just a high price sheet, that is the same as regular foam sheet? I am not ready to do it, right at the moment, but did want input about it. I'm ready for the hat hoop, but hubby is working on a hot water leak, at one of the kids house, so my hat hoop is on hold. I don't trust my grip, on a knife, like one Cutie did in Projects to try to make myself.
