So I am loving the Balsa Wood covered boxes that Spendlove and Mysew1325 have done...I have been looking on line for Balsa Wood...all I see are narrow lengths...where does one find large pieces? Thanks...

That I have used is only 75mm wide (about 3") It really isn't a problem. Just build up a layer on your stabiliser big enough for your box. Use a glue stick, particularly along the joins and push the pieces together firmly. If you choose a design big enough to almost fill the area you need, the joins will be stitched together and become invisble.

Perfect...thank you, Sue! What is the thickness that you use or would recommend if the 3/32" is a bit thick?

spendlove by spendlove 28 Apr 2015

I used 1/16th thick, (1.5mm)

I usually see them in narrower widths but they do also come in larger sizes but may not be readily available or cost more than you want to spend but like spendlove suggested, you can join the pieces you need to create the size piece you need for the design you have chosen. If you do not have any woodworking tools then it is still quite easy to get a seam to match up by slightly overlapping the two sheets then using a utility knife and straight edge cut through both layers together at the same time. These two layers then will match up perfectly since if you wobble any in your cut it does the exact opposite on the other board since you are doing them at the same time. I hope that you understand what I mean. It is also how my husband would match up laminate on counter tops that needed to have a seam due to their length. These boxes really look beautiful and can even picture them on balsa cut out like quilted stars and such. Really the sky is the limit to what can be done. My husband also recommended not to try staining the balsa wood as it is so porous that the stain will look splotchy and uneven. I can't wait to see what others come up with. Pam

The strips I've used have really good edges so it isn't necessary to cut them again.

Good straight edges make it a much easier job! Glad to know that the product you are getting are ready to be joined with glue. Years ago, I was not so fortunate in the product we had gotten. Love the boxes you have done, and appreciate you sharing them with us. Pam

I would shop at the link. There may be a hobby shop in your area that you might prefer.

Thanks, Rescuer...this is the first I have seen that is wider than 3"...

That looks fab, but it is a bit thick. I haven't seen any sheets like that here in UK.
