AS most of you know we were away for 12 days & our dog Bruiizer was staying with my sister. Since we have come back he has been throwing up every day he is not really eating & overall not himself. When we ask if he wants to go for a walk he is excited & gets ready to go but then he can not go as far as normal........He won't eat his kibble wet or dry so yesterday we made him an egg & he gobbled it right up & he seemed to keep it. He drinks but not as much as normal. Has anyone else had this problem with their dog? I have been reading up on it & it seems that this could be stress related from our being away....Should I be worried? Should we take him to the vet or is this normal after being away? I should also mention that staying @ my sister's she got her own new puppy... they did not get on well...

He seems to be back on track today & now we will simply keep an eye on his water intake & then it will be safe to say he is back to normal again. Once again I am thankful for all the advice given here it has given me comfort through this ordeal!~hugs & **~

except for one wee mishap last night he is doing so much better. I will continue with the rice diet for another day or two & then he should be fine again..........

He is on the bland rice & minced chicken diet & he is doing so much better then before & today we are leaving his water out for him so will continue to watch & make sure that he is drinking properly again. I feel we are in the home stretch & today will be the turning point. I hope so anyway ~hugs & **~

Glad Bruiizer is doing better. I googled "dog flu" and was surprised how serious it is. Hugs, Joyce

When our Collie was sick years ago, the vet said to give her aspirin every four hours to help her upset tummy. It worked, but each dog is different.
I would check with your vet first to see if it is okay to give it to him. Hugs.

update on Bruiizer..... I was wrong he wasn't any better yesterday & I tried the Pepto & gave him some egg since he would not eat the Pepto alone, he threw it up too. I was @ my wits end so I started to research on line & what I was able to find repeatedly was a 12-24 hour fast......Made the most sense to me so I took away all the food & water. I gave him 2 tablespoons of water every hour all night long until I fell asleep about 3am but I had my cell phone alarm on so was able to do it twice more. He has not thrown up all night nor has he wanted to go out to eat any more grass. All are good signs I hope. This morning I gave him 2 tablespoons of plain rice & so far so good. He seems in better spirits & is sniffing around for something to eat. I have read that if he keeps the rice down he can have a wee bit of chicken with his rice for dinner & to keep giving him water every hour until he shows that he can keep everything down. Only 1-2 tablespoons @ a time though & not to leave it out as we would normally do. This will give him tummy a chance to settle & make him feel better which includes his energy levels will be better too. I am hopeful.............& thank you all for your advice & concern. ~hugs & **~

Do you have access to your vet by phone? I am always such a worry wart when it comes to our animals, as they can't tell us what is wrong or what they need......sounds like he may be recovering....let's hope!!

pldc by pldc 19 Apr 2015

I hope so too Vicki. I do not have weekend access to our vet & it is quite traumatizing for him to go to the vets I thought maybe I could try this first....rather then make things worse. Today he seems to making positive progress as I mentioned I gave him some bland rice this morning & he has kept it down & now I have given him 2 tablespoons more & of course he has his appetite back & ate it right up so we shall hope that this line of treatment is working.......

Fantastic!! I know what you mean about the vet trauma....all of our kitties scream all the way to the vet.....it can't be good for them to get so stressed, right?

pldc by pldc 20 Apr 2015

he whimpers all the way there & we never tell him he is going there.....he just seems to know?

I did try the pepto but no luck. thanks anyway I do appreciate it

he loves cheese & peanutbutter (not together of course) so may give him that in the next day or two if he continues to keep things down

Glad Bruiser is better. we who are no longer youngsters do get stressed in unchartered territory and change gets my tummy all upset. Maybe now that everything is back where it's suppose to be he'll be back to his old self/Lillian

Drinking is the most vital. If he has now started drinking more, then likely he is starting to do better. With your sister getting a new puppy then there is no telling what the puppy could have brought with him/her from where the puppy came from. Pet stores or rescue shelters can often be breeding grounds as they are often kept in close quarters.

If Bruiizer is still throwing up, then also would be deciding if a vet appt is in order though if he stresses the vet appts then I would watch him another day before making that decision since he is at least getting the water intake. In the next couple days, if he is still not eating his kibble well, then would make up food like you did the egg. When we were feeding 2 mastiff puppies that the mom did not have enough milk for, we had to make up their food combining white rice, minced chicken, minced up vegetables etc then also added the milk replacement our vet had recommended but since Bruiizer is not a pup just combine the other items using far more rice, vegetable and sounds like a scrambled egg would be alright with Bruiizer too. We made up a large pot every other day so it made feedings easier and just warmed up what was needed. Hopefully Bruiizer will be getting back to himself with lots of love from his favorite people. If Bruiizer is more of an elderly dog then the new pup would have been very stressful not to mention your sister would have needed to give the puppy more attention when Bruiizer was already having some abandonment issues. Lots of love and a bit of spoiling for a few days should turn things around and if not then would be looking to get a vet appt to rule out any other illnesses. The dog flu sounds very scary and hope that Bruiizer has not come into contact with anything like that! Hope to hear good news soon about how your little Bruiizers doing.

I took so long to write up my post you have already given us a very good update. Sounds like you could now use a nap from your sleepless nights not to mention your jet lag from a wonderful vacation. So glad it sounds like Bruiizer is doing much better day by day being back in his normal house and family. So relieved for you and him.

thank you very much this is all quite useful information! I think the ginger cookie has helped immensely! He is 9.5 years young & never even seen a puppy so I'm sure that has quite a lot to do with it. We have just taken him for a walk & he made it all the way round our normal route so YEH! I will give him rice or egg for dinner as well just to be on the safe side but he seems to be getting back to normal & he finally had a bowel movement on our walk & that is the first one all week! A good sign he is getting back to normal. Thank you very much for all your info It is comforting to know ~hugs~

well after throwing up 4 more times this morning I decided to give him a ginger cookie. One that I have for when I have tummy upset. This afternoon he seems more like himself & has even had 6 kibble bits & has kept that down as well so I am more relieved then I can say. I think I will finally be able to sleep restfully tonight! He has not thrown up again since the cookie YEH! Thank you for letting me express my concern I know that to many he is just a dog but he is my baby & I love him dearly............

I would be at the vet's. Seeing this much "not normal" behavior and the throwing up are more than stress. He can't tell you if he swallowed some foreign object that is causing distress, or what.
Plus that will lessen the stress that you are now feeling.

He is certainly suffering from being away from you, especially as Bruiizer and the puppy did not get on. He will soon come right. Lots of TLC.

I, too would be concerned about this new flu going around in dogs.....we have a friend who takes his dog to doggie daycare a couple of times a week and they brought a vet in and gave all the dogs a flu shot (with owners permission, of course).....I wouldn't have know about it if our friend hadn't told us......it is in the midwest, big time and has never been seen in the USA before...I understand it is more respiratory though....google "new dog flu", Loralye as there is a wealth of info there........I am hoping that Buriizer is just suffering from separation anxiety.......Keep us posted........

Poor Bruiizer he's been under a lot of stress, with you leaving and then having to put up with the new puppy. I keep my granddaughter"s dog and we have a new puppy. By the time she comes back to get her dog he will be stressed out and act like what Bruiizer is doing, but with this new virus that the dogs are getting. I would take him to the vet if he don't show any improvement shortly. Please keep us up dated on Bruiizer

thank you, I am not aware of a new virus can you tell me more about it please?

lin02 by lin02 17 Apr 2015

From what I know from the news.... that new flu virus is killing the dogs, and they don't know if the vaccine they have will help them.
