I have a laptop with a touch screen & windows 8.I get into trouble with the touch screen ,things get drag into wrong place etc .I think it is because my fingers are not fast enough or as nimble as they were.
My advice is to try out the touch screen & windows 8 for 1/2 hour on a display model before you buy.

Windows 8 and 8.1 have a compatibility mode to help run older programs. Check this out.

I bought an HP 15,,, lots of features and is budget friendly. Half the cost of all the other computers out there It has windows 8 but I got used to it quickly. No touch screen either Suzanne

I just bought an ASUS and I am happy with all of it except that when open, the keys are lit up and I find them harder to see. Which ever you choose, I extremely recommend you buy into Best Buy Geek Squad. They have rescued me many a late night when all other services are closed.

I am also looking into getting a new laptop. There are still some new....NOT refurbished.....Windows 7 laptops available through the HP website. I'm going for the 7 as I've been told the older Viking 4D program won't run on 8. I'm also of the "vintage" model so I'm thinking I'd also like the 17" screen for my old eyesight. Touch is not so important with the bigger screen I think. Also I want a lot of memory...some are available with up to 12GB memory and 1T hard drive. Of course you have to pay for the bigger and better add-ons...but it depends on what you really want.

Decisions, decisions...I would say you would want a laptop that is running an operating system that will support your embroidery programs..some older programs cannot be run using Windows 8 or 8.1 and that is a consideration. I would say you want one with a CD/DVD driver as they are making many now without them...can't load some programs with out the CD/DVD driver...I have a laptop with a touch screen running Win 8.1 and love it...all my programs are compatible with Win. 8.1 so I was lucky...

If you run embroidery softwear like PE Design or Embird them you need a laptop and not a tablet to run the softwear. Well in choosing a laptop ... I presume that you have a budget. Look and see what is available to you locally in your price range and check the options out. Have fun and goodluck
