I recall reading somewhere recently that the tension should only be changed when the presser foot is down, I think it was in reference to a bernina but they assumed all other brands were the same. It is not in the manual. I have never heard of this before and would really like to know what others here think. I very rarely change the tension but wonder if this is the same method with other brands of machines. I am curious as to what you all think about this one

I know one is supposed to hold the presser foot at its highest point, when threading a machine, so the thread seats properly into the tension disks. But, I have never heard of it needing to be up, when setting tension. I cannot see why that would make a difference with the tension.

I never change the tension on my Bernina machines. I have never had problems with tensions - not even for metallic thread.

You should have the presser foot up. That way the thread can settle into the tension disks. When the foot is down, the tension disks "close" and the thread doesn't sit properly in it. On my Bernina, I can't get the thread in the disks at all when the foot is down. Then I remember to raise my pressure foot.

I was told to always have the presser foot up when you change the tension. Hmm.

Never heard of this. ...and dont really think it matters!
I have been sewing from years although new to embroidery. .......but never really bothered to check the position of presser foot while changing tension settings in both my machines! :)

I had not heard that. Luckily I have not had to change the tension on my machines. They do really well. Years ago on the old one I changed the tension and it didn't matter where the presser foot positioned. I suggest you check with your owner's manual or call the dealer.
