My daughter has asked me to make a swimming bag for Georgie. I realize that I will have to line it with plastic. I have never worked with plastic before. Do I make the plastic lining separately or do I sew the seams, plastic and material together. Any tips would be really appreciated. Sarah.

Evening Sarah, I made small laundry bags for my two grandchildren this week for nursery school. I used the waterproof mattress protector material as lining and made them separately, and finished it off with a double drawstring.

Thank you . I just do not know if I can buy that material where I live. I am off to my local shops tomorrow to see what is available.

Have you thought of using plastic screen (mesh like) for this bag?

Is that the same as shade cloth?

Like window screen but made of plastic. Seen lots of cute bags using this.

I have made swimming bags out of rubber backed material, like some curtains are made from. ( Waterproof ) no need to neaten inside as it does not fray and does not need plastic. linning Some materials have a soft velvety feeling to them and some are just rubbery. There is a few different kinds on the market today. Sew seams with paper over them and it tears away easily. That way machine foot glides easy over the fabric. Hope this may help you. Sandra

I do like the sound of this. I live in S. Africa and we do get that type of curtain material here.

Check out a fabric called PUL it soft but some what waterproof, it is used to make diaper covers. It easy to work with, you may need a teflon foot or roller foot. I know there are tutorials. Connecting threads had a raincoat pattern and the fabric. Hope this helps. Cheri

You don't need to buy a specialty foot, just place tear away over the seam before stitching.

I agree sew them together............however that being said I have sometimes had difficulty gliding the plastic through either on the top or the bottom & something that I have found to be helpful is to sew the fabric on the bottom & the plastic on the top but also use tissue paper on top of that....this prevents it from sticking & giving you a nice even feed while you sew then it tears off nicely. Best of Luck Sarah. ~hugs~

Hi Sarah, I'd sew them all together but I'd do a French seam, that way there is no raw edged inside seam showing. Good luck with it. Love Chris

Thank you Chris, I will probably make a kind of shoe bag with a draw string.
