A question which has nothing to do with sewing/embroidery and the like. Yesterday I had an appointment in one of those places that has a automated system where your name is called when its your appointment. As with the last system my name is called as Carolyn. I have politely said that my name is Caroline. The names sound different and are spelt differently. I don't like being called by the wrong name. I asked if my name could be Mrs ------- and was told that it was not possible. (Just as they say its not possible to get the word Caroline) Right Cuties please can I have some responses from you so I can sort this out politely. Or do something drastic and change my name to something totally different. Thanks for reading and flowers

My gripe is slightly different but just as annoying. I have a surname which is an "Mc" (as in a Scottish name). The next letter is a capital "N" but a lot of times correspondence arrives as "Mcn_____". When I have objected to this the answer is "we can't do it in the software program."

i understand, my name has always been massacred, most people try to do it right and are apologetic when they don't, but machines just don't have the range of brain power & learning. i usually laugh with people and let them know if they are close or not then i tell them that most people call me DQ. life is to short to let the wrong pronunciation of our name cause lots of problems. i would say to the nurse "well the machine made a good effort i'm Caroline not Carolyn" and laugh about it.at least you can enjoy the reast of the day.

Hi Mooie. Pesky cold callers is a completely different problem within itself. But if they get your name wrong you can honestly say they don't live here or they are out. What were the Brown children called?

mooie24 by mooie24 27 Jan 2015

Yes pesky cold callers lol xx...
they had a son named after his granddad so Bobby Brown xx

Some people just cannot "get" names - you are a LINE not a LYN.
'Simple' as the meerkat on the Aussie TV adverts says.
There are rules to how the English language is pronounced, surely someone could program that into a speaking computer system??
I used to live in a street called WALL. Every time I was asked to say it again, I would say "Wall, as in the thing that holds up the ceiling."
Good luck.

You can't fix most things connected with computers and cash registers! I called my bank's 800-number to get the branch address in Op-eh-LIKE-a Alabama. The computer generator asked did I mean O-PELL-ick-uh? If i didn't agree, it wasn't going to give me the address. The problem is, some programmer from the other end of the country or world had to GUESS how to pronounce the city names and put that in a program. Aargh! (That's a pirate word, and it sounds as it is spelled!)

I feel your pain. I'm from the southern United States, where lots of girls have double first names. AnnaRose, Annabeth, MaryLynne, etc. My dad was Jerry, so I am Jerrilyn. Pronounced Jerry+Lynn. Easy enough? You'd think.

Thanks for replying Jerrilyn. You have a very unusual name so thanks for telling us how you were named

I agree with you. I have the same with the name written. when my name is written Gerrie. I always feel: it's not me. So you are right, let people say the name you have at the right way. and let them have the respect to call you by your name. For them it's just a name, but for you it's your name ! Hugs, Gerry

I'm so with you. Had terrible times when the english lessons start in school and the main characters in the book were "Peter and Betty" :o(
My sister's name is Susanne but when she was a teenager many tried to call her "Susi". My mom was very strict in that case. When somebody called and wanted to speak with "Susi" she just said that here lives no Susi and hung up. They all learned pretty quickly ;o)
Greetings, Bettina

Life is too short to be frustrated over this issue. My name is often mispronounced but when it is done, I just look at the person, smile and say my name clearly. They don't do it to upset you, so just repeat your name correctly for them. Maybe next time they will get it right.

As my name is bawled out over a system in a huge waiting room sort of standing up and shouting. You dont even register your arrival with a person... Thanks for replying

My grandmother's name was Caroline. Many people wanted to call her Carolyn, much to her dismay, ("nice name, but not mine.") even before the age of automation. My granddaughter's name is now Caroline also, but so far (she's seven) it is pronounced correctly. I think it is a popular name now with the young ones.

My name is a combination of both first and middle name. Most computer systems do not accept a space in the first name block nor a full name in the middle initial block. All three names can be spelled in more than one way. After my marriage, my middle name was dropped and substituted with only the initial by Social Security Administration. GRRRR! Paper work was submitted correctly along the old card showing my full former name. Because of these errors and problems, several incorrect names show up on my credit report as "other names used." Double GRRRRR!

My last name is Valentine, like St Valentine, Valentine's Day, or what you get from your sweetie on that day. But some people insist on saying ValenTEEN. I guess they can't believe it can be so simple. But it is irritating to me. And my first name has more than one spelling so I just ignore that because it is usually pronounced right.

I can feel with you, but for me. I decided to just answer to anything that is close to my name. Otherwise I would spend far to much time being frustrated. My last name people can not pronounce and about 80% it is miss spelled. My first name is Angelika that most English speaking people pronounce in such a way it sounds entirely different then from the German version. Therefor I became Angie. BTW my middle name is Caroline

I understand how you feel. I grew up with people calling me Linda and Carol. I agree, they are nice names but not mine. Perhaps you can make yourself a name tag to wear to these places so the people will see your real name. I'm sure the folks who work there are also frustrated because if it happens to you, it happens to many and they hear the correction from each one. Perhaps the manager can be notified of the problem. If enough people complain, they might fix it.

A lot of people do not pronounce my name correctly. Damaris, so I just tell them" just call me dee" Then they want to spell it with a e instead of a. Who wants to be called Da????

That is nearly as bad as being called Susan! Only my mother could get away with that.
If you are going to change it, I recommend something Anglo Saxon, like Elswitha. (She was Alfred the Great's Queen.) That will really confuse it.

Love your idea with Elswitha. My sister's second name is Roswitha and she hates it ;o)

I too feel your frustration. My name is Julia and some wants to call me Julie. I don't look like a Julie nor will I answer to that name since it isn't my name. And since I work in retail, people think they can call me by the name of Julie, and even then I still ignore them and just help them with their orders and move them along the line. If one must deal with being called out of their name, just remind them what your real name is. Don't let it get you.

I hate the automated age! As I age I have more trouble understanding those things! About the only thing you can do is ask EVER time you call, go in, or are called. Maybe if you just bother the person at the desk enough she'll check the records??? Either that or the system pronounces the 2 names as the same? How I miss the days of humans! Know there's others that share your frustration!!
