Is anyone running Windows 8 or 8.1 and using an external hard drive for back up? If so, who is the manufacturer...I am still having problems with the Seagate external hard drive I purchased..Thanks..

I use 8.1 on my laptop - which I bought October 2013 after my other one was stolen during a burglary. I have a very old (2006) Conceptronic Photobox - very small memory (40 Gb) compared to the current ones; a somewhat newer one called LaCie and a one year old WD My Cloud that is wireless (and used by my husband as well). The older ones work great but I have to make sure I use an USB2 port, not the faster USB3. I am having a bit of trouble with the WD My Cloud - automatic back-up seems to take industrial action now and again and copying files is not a fast process.

Thanks, Martine...I cannot get the auto backup to work on this one...copies the first backup files perfectly...but won't complete an auto-backup...spend five days with Seagate tech only to have to resort to copy and paste entire new file set...frustrating...

I have had problems setting automatic backups with all the computers I have had over the years probably because I am not very computer savvy. I have then had problems retrieving if auto backup is set.

Anyway I don't know if this will help but I just manually copy and paste the hard drive contents I want over to the new hard drive. I now have it set up so everything is within one folder with main sub folders for everything else like photos, music, embroidery files and important documents etc. all I do is copy and paste the one folder and set it to replace all files with the same names so I have the most recent backed up.

Thanks for the information...I have resorted to this copy and paste as I cannot get the auto backup working...I was hoping someone actually did get the auto backup functioning as the copy and paste takes sooooo long... :)

I do the copy/paste thing too - automatic backups never seem to work for me.

I hope you manage to get it sorted. I will be sticking to copy and paste as I have found the format stays like the original files. When I have had to retrieve anything from an automatic backup it was difficult to find anything as nothing was saved in original folders. a couple of bad experiences like that have cured me from using auto backup feature.

if you manage to sort out a better way I would love to know as the copy and paste takes a long time to save manually.
