Have you ever donated your hair to Locks of Love? I have and just read that I was mistaken in my belief that wigs were made and donated to young cancer patients. When I went to the Locks of Love website, it clearly states that most of the donations are for a genetic condition known as alopecia areata. This condition causes a long term hair loss, sometimes permanent. I'm not saying it's not a good thing, I'm just staying I was mistaken in my beliefs.

I have a little granddaughter who is 2 next week and she has been diagnosed with Alopecia. If I could donate to her I would, when we donate to anything we really do not know who gets the donated article. As long as you are happy donating good on you

If there is a young girl in your life that is a Girl Scout, there is a form on the Wigs for Kids website that the girl scout can send it with a hair donation and receive a merit badge. Two good things in one action!

As do I. A very good cause. I just was confused and wondered where the belief came from?

Here is their statement about charging for the hair pieces. I guess some pay and some don't. I believe it is a good program! My daughter has donated several times.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children. The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need.

Alopecia areata causes so much pain to the sufferer in that the person feels selfconscious all the time about the balding spots and lots of them cannot afford the wigs. I do think it is a worthy cause.

No argument here, I was just stating what I thought it was and what I discovered it actually was.

My daughter is donating her hair this Saturday. It's been on the calendar for months. I don't think she cares who it goes to as long as it is helping someone.

That is the spirit of giving. I didn't really care either, I just had it in my mind it was for mostly cancer patients.

My issue with Locks for Love is that they charge for their wigs. There are several places that donate (not sell) their wigs to cancer patients. My daughter donated to Wigs for Kids and I know Pantene's Beautiful Lengths program is also for wigs for young cancer patients.

I have donated and was under the same impression your were that they were given to young cancer patients. When I first started I was sure they were...I know that Pantene has a program to donate also, but haven't checked into this.

Yes, I read about the Pantene program. It's not that I'm against who is getting the Lock of Love donations, I was just surprised and wondered if I was the only one whose beliefs were incorrect.
