I have done the deed. Last summer my little pekingese, Mushu nearly died with heatstroke. First picture is how he used to look and how he looks now. DH is going to have a fit but Mushu's health is far more important than how he looks.

Just an update - Mushu is thoroughly enjoying his new hair cut. I have decided in January I will go a little shorter as January/ February are our hottest months.

Good on you, thinking of his comfort first. I have a shorthaired breed (greyhound) but even they suffer on the very hot days, especially the black ones. Mushu looks just as cute with his new look.

Actually a vet will tell you that a dogs coat will keep them cool in the summer and warm in the winter. If groomed everyday a long hair dogs coat will shed the unneeded undercoat they grow for winter. If your dog is left outside for long periods of time make sure they have shade and plenty of water. If Mushu is an inside dog which he looks like then he will not shed much of his undercoat if kept in a cool house. Then if exposed to the outside for to long of a period and playing hard could have caused the heatstroke. So glad your baby is doing fine now.

Thank you for this. Last summer my vet told me to have his coat cut and I did not listen and Mushu was very ill with heat stroke. We have incredibly hot summers here in South Africa.

You are lucky to have air condition. We do not reach such high temps as you but we have high humidity being close to the sea.

Thank you Angie. He now has very little fur on his tummy just for that reason.

What is it with men and long hair, be it on woman or animal, they seem to prefer long. I think Mushu looks great with his fur cut and we know how much better he will feel. Suppose we were walking around in a fur coat in 80 or 90 degree weather. we would have a heat stroke also. Now he looks cool, calm, and comfortable/Lillian

He looks awesome and a lot cooler........some of my friends do this with their long haired cats in the summer.........it is all about "creature comforts"

Thank you Vicki - he does not look so majestic but better to be comfortable. His fur feels like a teddy bear!!

I bet he is running around and enjoying the cool feeling on his skin. My one long haired dog gets clipped back twice a year and she always responds by acting like a puppy.
Ask hubby how he would like it if he had to try running whilst wearing a thick fur coat in hot sunshine. Thank you for considering your pets welfare over looks . Only one thing between a short hair cut and a longer one and that is about three weeks.

After all it is only hair and it will grow. He is very old but amazingly enough he was running all over the house last night.

Many people do it here as well with their dogs - just takes a bit of getting used to his 'new' look.

Well done! Mushu looks great with his new trendy hair style. Just did the same thing for one of my old-timers a couple of weeks ago and was so glad I did; felt awful hacking off her beautiful coat which reached down to the floor and looked very glamorous on a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel but knew there was no way she would cope with a 45 degrees C day, even with air conditioning, unless I did. She got a little impatient with me while I was doing it because her coat was so thick my electric clippers broke down and I had to finish her off by hand scissors; she does not look as smart as your boy, but she is now quite happy without all that extra weight - a supermarket bag crammed full! - and we both know our dog's coats will have plenty of time to grow back again before next winter.

The lady apologized when I collected Mushu. He had not been easy. Would not stand still and tried to bite her. I have been busy with the scissors trimming him up where she missed out. Next time I think he will be better.
