I have a tip and a question..................

Question: What is the bug in the photo? They are taking over my flower garden and have started migrating into the house now. It looks a little like a firefly except the coloring on it's back is red. (sorry he's a little squished, but I asked him nicely to be still while I made his photo and he refused.)

Tip: I wanted to put a design on a ribbed shirt and I know when I put it on, it stretches a bit (ok a lot) at the top and didn't know what that would do to the design, so...........I put the shirt on inside out and slapped a big piece of sticky stabilizer that would fit my hoop on it ( in the correct direction )and carefully took the shirt off. I then hooped it and put my design on and IT WORKED!

Turn off the music and put the treats back in the kitchen. Then take your little trouble maker to the truancy office (local plant shop/county extension office) in a plastic bag. There has to be someone there that can I. D. him and recommend ways to send him and his friends to Nirvana.

Looks like some sort of beetle to me. Capture one and take to the nearest Pikes Nursery or to your county extension agent. KAY

Kind of looks like a box elder bug. My daughter has a bunch of bugs that are trying to get in her back door. She has trees in her yard. Also a brick home, so I don't know for sure, but they show up every year.

As this little bug has appeared again I wonder if you have been able to solve the problem are they still a problem?

There's thousands of them. Trying to talk DH into an exterminator. I would try the dishwash liquid but I'd have to buy a 50 gallon drum!

BLAST I LOST THE MESSAGE I JUST WROTE!!!!

OK, I'll try again.....

Trying to think back to my school days, I seem to remember insects have six legs and spiders have eight???
So is this beastie a spider or an insect?
I can't tell if the digits are legs or if the front ones are feelers.

Either way, in nature, red is a warning to other bugs and animals that the thing that is red is poisonous, or dangerous, so PLEASE don't touch one, it may secrete some nasty stuff.

Could you catch one in a jar, without squishing it, and take it to a local pest control service for identification? That's what I would do.
Hugs n roses, Meganne

Fronts are feelers. Good idea on the pest control. Thanks.

love your idea with the T shirt design. About that insect, think it best if you keep him and don't share.....

I am laughing at myself this is not the kind of post to skim over quickly. Makes someone like me jump conclusions so had to read all. But my quick thought was Oh my don't recognize the bug and knowing how photos sometimes/ alot are not to size.... is he little or big? Did she catch it with sticky paper? Pays to read lol. I am now tipped and hope to remember that one as well as to what a box elder bug looks like.

Just a gardening comment that I have always heard: It is not enough to love the flowers, you must HATE the bugs. (I only feel that way about Japanese beetles when they dine on roses.)

I know, we called them June bugs when I was a child and I used to tie a string around one of their legs and watch it fly around in circles. Sounds a bit cruel now......until I see my roses decimated!

I think you are a genius. I am a genius at times. It's wonderful how innovative we can be! Glad you found your bug and it is not harmful.

This bug is what we refer to as a "stinkbug" in Georgia! If touched he will give off an unpleasant scent, but we only see them occasionally, and are unaware of any true damage that they do to gardens or plants.
Glad your design turned out well on the stretchy fabric!!
Hugs, Angel

I'm in Georgia and although he's very close to the stink bug ( I was thinking the same) you can see in the picture that I squished him a little bit and he didn't smell. Thanks and a flower for your reply.

I can't tell really well, but if he's black with a red "sorta" V on his back, it is a box elder bug. The only way I know to get rid of them is cut down all the box elder trees! They hide most of the time & will come out in the sun. Not sure what, if any, damage they do. But if you look up box elder bug on Internet, you can read about them.

By the way, they are common in TN & GA...lucky us!

Thank you, I'll look him up you explained what he looks like perfectly.A flower for your trouble.

Don't know about the bug...hope I don't see any where I live...however, I do know that you did exactly the right thing for the stretchy top...anything stretchy should be "stretched" to the point it will be when worn..like socks, sweaters, etc...and then embroidered...It may look strange at first, but when it is put on and worn it looks perfect...good for you.

It might be a bug called the box elder. we had thousands of them. the only way we could get rid of them was to fill a spray bottle with Dawn dishsoap and water and spray them. my granddaughters thought this part was fun. It sufficates them. they really don't do any harm, they're just annoying because they're bugs.

I think you are right. I looked them up and this one very closely resembles the picture on the internet. Thanks and a flower for your trouble.

What was the ratio of water to dishsoap?

Great tip. Have just looked through my gardening book and it looks as if we in S. Africa do not have a bug like that.

Looks to me like a Florida cock roach. If so you have a battle on your hands. I'd call a pro. And there is nothing nice about a roach!

jrob by jrob edited 21 Sep 2014

Oh, no, I'm sure he's not a Florida cockroach. Those things get big enough to ride a small child. LOL
He's red on his back and after being given the Boxelder Bug name, I think that's what he is, but thanks for playing! Thanks and a flower for your trouble.
