Sewing/Quilting Tip-As most of you are aware,I have been making the hipster bags.I recently purchased this fabric,as I wanted something with purples and lavenders, and I also liked the paisley design. However, since I also quilt it myself, and I don't claim to be a quilter,I was having trouble seeing my white marks on the navy background.I don't have the quilting attachment guide for my machine, so I came up with this idea, for my guide lines to make my grids.I took a length of cut-a-way,because of its stiffness, and cut an even 1 inch width in this particular bag.I have done up to 1 and 1/4 inch.I place it to my first seam. The very first seam was marked from corner to corner,on the diagonal. The length doesn't matter, because as I sew,I just slide it down!...I hope this idea helps someone else, especially with aged eyes,to 'see' how to get thier grid-lines even. That's my sewing tip for today.-Toogie

Thanks for the tip Toogie! I have a gadget that Chris mentioned but there are times I can't find it, or else I have it and don't know how to use it. lol! That fabric will certainly make one beautiful bag! Paisley is one of my favorites, does that date me?

If it dates you, then most of us are around the same era.I think it is making up nicely.

How can liking paisley patterns date you? They go in and out of fashion so frequently that they are almost always in fashion and available to be bought somewhere. I had paisleys on the old eiderdown that I had as a child and then wore them in a lovely purple blouse as a teen and here we are some 40+ years later and they are still around.

They say Necessity is the Mother of Invention! and we all know Mothers have the best ideas.. I think if you can't find or don't have a fabric guide then you can't go passed the Toogie Tool lol

Hi Toogie, I use this quilting guide - I'll attach a picture of it. I don't know what sewing machine you have, but this is fabulous! Love Chris

P.S. I absolutely love this fabric. I had a beautiful dress when I was about 19 or 20 made of Viyella in purples, blues and mauves. Cannot buy Viyella here anymore in Australia. Beautiful job on your bags, just LOVE THEM. Love Chris

I'm sorry you don't have this attachment for your machine, it's such a great invention.

I'm sorry now too.I thought that I either, had one in my attachments box or I had seen it in my book or somewhere.I didn't.I do have a opening in the backside of my foot holder.I wouldn't call it a hole, because it is not completely round, but like a T opening. They probally make one for my machine, but I never needed one before now. That is why I said this idea was born out of necessity.-lol-I am using my Brother SE 270D for this sewing.Do you google quilting edge guide for that particular machine? I'll try that and see what I come up with.Thanks....Also I've never heard of Viyella.Does that mean paisley to us in USA ?

Patricia109 by Patricia109 29 May 2014

Viyella is the name of the fabric, not the print. We still call the paisley pattern a paisley in Australia.

Gorgeous fabrics, Toogie! I am very partial to paisley prints. :) Your sewing tip is fantastic! I think that sounds easier than marking and then worrying if the marks will come out! *Many Flowers!*

My bulb is still burning-lol...lol meaning I still have a little sense left! I pondered on how to keep my same distance, and a straight line, because I really couldn't see my marks on the navy.It worked out so well,I had to share with Cuties.-Toogie

What a great idea!! And you don't have to get that chalk line off either!! Tks!

That's so true.I had to mark the X across the square with the chalk, then went from there with this idea.I also started these first 4 stitching lines from the center outwards,so my fabric wouldn't get distorted....Geat idea you say? every once in a while I surprise myself!-lol.. lol

Thanks,I hope the lady that gets it, likes it as well.It won't show soil easy, since its so hard to see a mark, that's for sure.

Great idea Toogie- I did a similar idea with masking tape that my father-in-law had given me(like about 25 yrs.ago)-He used to go to auctions-he brought back a huge box of all widths of masking tape-he give me 20 rolls of it- I used it for this that and the other thing when I came up with the idea to use it as a stitching guide on a baby blanket that I was putting together. Worked like a charm and I didn't have to do any measuring, just covered the material with tape strips-stitch all one direction-remove strips and then repeat the other direction.
Wish I still had all the tape lol. ~linda~

I'm sure that took a while to place! This cut-a-way lays into your previous stitching, kind of laying in the ditch,so to speak and you don't need a long piece either, mine is about 12 inches.I just move it down.
