Question for our quilting community. Have been invited to learn how to use a 'half-square triangle ruler' for $50. BYO materials, but the ruler is included. Is this a bit of a rip-off or not? I think I could probably figure out how to use the ruler by myself. Is it worth doing? What would be the most popular size to buy? Sincere Thanks

Check out Fons and Porter's web site for videos on using the ruler. They have very helpful demonstrations to help quilters learn or remember how to do something.

If you are a new quilter it might be worth it 1. to actually learn the technique AND practicing it making sure you are doing everything right and 2.meeting other quilters, probably one or two you will just "connect" with(several of my friends of 30 yrs are from my first class in a new town) and 3. if finances aren't a consideration. I am finding lately that the price of classes has gone up almost as much as the fabric but we are hooked so what are we to do???If you have ever taught anything rmemeber the teachers experience, time etc .

yes, I have done a bit of 'teaching' once in a while and certainly appreciate the effort. If it's so expensive as to exclude people who really need the help, it's too much don't you think

I say...save your money...you don't need any special rulers to make a half square triangle...and if you buy a special ruler...it should come with instructions...you can do a lot of other things with your $50...if this link doesn't show you enough...just google "How do I make a half square triangle"...there are lots of links...

Hi, how long does the class last for? How many others will be there (that could be interesting meeting some new people with similar interests)
Will there be instruction sheets? Asking you to being your own fabric is interesting but I see it as a plus as you wont be landed with fabric you don't like. Look forward to hearing what you decide and if you go please let us know about it

yes it was a bit interesting, but not mind blowing, if you know what I mean.

They can show you ways you never thought of to use the ruler, having said that if the class is held with a reputable company or quilt shop, they usually have instruction sheets with the rulers. I would checkout the shop first: 1st to see the price on ruler 2nd to see if they already come with instructions...then the choice is yours

have not seen this ruler but I cut a square, any size, then cut diagonal to get my half square triangle maybe with this ruller it is faster and easier.

it seems that the process is quicker and apparently more accurate. Must say I'm a bit tempted.
