Hello all Cuties! A question please, something I have not mastered yet is rounded ends to satin stitches, can anyone help? You know what I mean, a satin stitched line but instead of the square end, I'd like to make smaller stitches so that it looks rounded.

MANY thanks Cuties!!! Huggs Dolly

If you used the outline tool and chose satin stitch, just select that line in the object list on the right, then use Convert, Convert Column from Outline - see picture - it does not matter if you had set that to satin stitch. You are asked to set the width (might of course be the same width you had chosen for the satin stitch) and the programme does the rest.

So you don't have to start from scratch, just adapt what you already have.

If your endpoints are at the wrong end of the column, click Reverse Nodes Order (picture 2) and add the few points at the end.

The whole process does not take more than 2 or 3 minutes at the most! It took me 3 minutes including these two screenprints.

Many thanks Mops, I knew of the column tool but wondered if doing a simple outline with the satin stitch, tiny stitches, could not have rounded ends. So much longer to digitize now LOL

Only a few minutes extra, really!

As for the rounded corners. I added an extra point at each side of the corner, as close to it as I wanted. Then removed the top node and replaced it with a curve instead of a straight line - see picture 1. The result you see in picture 2. This was a 2 mm column. I also did a 3.4 mm one and added some extra points to get a nice corner - see pictures 3 and 4.
As you can see I only did the outside of the corner, you might want to do the inside as well.

Hi, this is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for taking the time to show us. I will go practice it!

So, here goes.

First the rounded end.
Use the A method, see picture one - easiest to use when making alterations of this kind. Edit your column. The blue lines show the (2 mm) column-picture 2 - and you can see how I changed the width. At the end I added a point on each side. It gives a rounded point but not very convincing - picture 3. It works far better with a wider column to start with. In this case 3mm, see pictures 4 and 5.

Dolly, I hope that helps.

Thank you, this shows it very nicely. Nice to know I did it right!

If in Embird you are using the outline tool set to satin stitches you are stuck with a set width.
Using the column tool it is a different matter, you van easily make parts narrower or wider to make more fluent lines. Clipartopolis shows how that is done in the cutwork butterfly tutorial - it gives you a good insight in the difference and use of the A, B and C method of makinf columns.
I'll make a few pictures on my laptop shortly (I'm on my iPad at the moment) to show how you can alter the corner.

Thank you, but I still don't understand how to keep the square but just make the corners slightly rounded. I want to keep the width. I understand how to change the ends of a line, but not a square.

The answer was meant for Dolly, I said I would add the corners later.

I think that may depend upon your software...I use Janome MBX Ver 4.5 and use the Turning Angle Satin tool (some call the two point tool)...you make two sets of points...left, right...left, right...left, right...etc...when you begin you put the first two points very close together and work down our shape...at the finishing end, you put your two points very close together...this makes the ends look rounded...Hope this makes sense...and that this is what you are asking...

Hi,

I was wondering how people make rounded corners on a square block. It is a similar question so I post it under your question. I would love to know the answer to both!

I am talking about a proper square block, drawn with sharp corners, but the end of the corner has rounded satin stitches.

Many thanks.
