Recently I downloaded a knitting pattern from a US site, the knitting needles are US size ( found a chart to convert to metric size ) but what are dpn needles?

I thought that they might be what we call circular needles-like a sock needle but has clear tubing in the middle to hold the stitches .

the dp stands for double pointed. They are being used in sock patterns or where ever a small circle is required. They usually come in sets of 4 or 5. 3 or 4 are being used to form the circle and one is to knit with.
