Hello Cuties-I am freezing! Today Avery's mom tried to send her to school, with a sweater type knit cap on, it is so cold.I can't tell you how many times I re-put it on her head. She is constantly moving, jerking, pushing with her head, because of the cerebral palsy, and a hat won't stay on.I made me this one,a few years ago (please forgive this photo of me,I look terrible).Anyway, it is warm for me and covers my neck good.I thought maybe this would work for Avery.I made it, this far, brought it on the bus this afternoon, but at this width,it won't fit over her head.Don't you think if I add a piece, down the center front, it would go over her head, even if at the face area I may have to tack it back like a cuff? I also added her some fringe at the back curve, to look a little more girly. Mine is unlined and if any are interested the size and instuctions for mine,I will post them. Again, sorry about the photo.I lost 33 pounds when I was sick with that fever for a month, and I sure look wrinkled.

#1 -right side of Avery's hat with band sewn on #2 is wrong side, and at the curve,on the corner is where I attached the fringe #3 and 4- all snapped up. I'll let you know, if she gets out of this one! I had cut hers smaller and it wouldn't fit over the head like mine and also, my mistake was not cutting the nattow part on the STRETCH of the fleece.THIS HAS TO BE CUT ON THE STRETCH, in order to go over head. Look at mine and capoodles comments.

Where are you, visiting ?? I ended up putting a wider strip all the way across the front edge. Then I put 2 snaps to close it up,so MAYBE she won't work if off.I will have to comment at the top here again to add her hat photos, and then its black, so it hard to see.

I really like what you did! Clever and I'll add this to your other instructions.
I'm in Seattle. My fourth grandchild was born Dec 3 and I always get to stay and help. He is 5 weeks and got admitted to the hospital yesterday with RSV--upper respiratory misery. He was maintaining 101.6 temperature. Fever alone is scarry. The 2 year old had it and both of us senior citizens...those are only age groups affected! It's really the yukkiest thing of it's sort that I've ever had. The doctors said that the baby's diaphragm could give out and he wouldn't breathe! He is having wonderful care.

Hope that all of you get well soon and congratulations on your 4th!

This was the size mine was cut,but it was a bought scarf that I turned into a hood.I don't think it has to be this long, and in fact if you are using thicker, stiffer fleece,I would recommend cutting it shorter. You want some to bunch up,around your neck for warmth, but not so much as to choke you.#1 Cut size 11 inches(STRETCHY WAY) X 24 on the FOLD,so when it opened it measures 11x48. Now fold it back, just like you cut it, right sides together. #2 Get a plate or saucer, anything round and at the very corner of the back, mark a curve, just taking the corner off, making it round out. Look at my photos.(Mine is folded where my face opening would be on the right of photo,Capoodles photo is on the left,it doesn't matter) #3 Now stitch with your regular sewing machine or serger/overlock.Stitch from the bottom, open edge, all the way up the LENGTH of the back, sewing toward the fold, curving at your mark and tapering to nothing. You don't want to go to far up here. You don't want a seam on the top of your head. Look at my photo. #4 Now mark from the fold edge, at the top, down 12 inches on the opposite long side.Put a pin there to hold. Look at 2nd photo #5 Now stitch this long edge, from the open at the bottom, up to the pinned mark.Be sure to backstitch this has a lot of stress here. This 12 inch opening is for your face. #6 Turn right side out.Slip over head to stay warm.........Variation: Just sew one long side, from the fold at the top down 12 inches. Now go back and mark your curve at that corner you just stitched and sew your curve. That's it!-Your hood is closed at the back of your head, but your long ends are free to wrap around your neck,crissed-crossed.(The whole front long side is open)-I hope this is clear and helps those, who don't have as much sewing experience, as us oldies. Good luck and try to stay warm,I'm TRYING!-Toogie

Was trying to find a Hooded scarf and came up with this diagram. It is for a knitted one but fleece or any soft draping fabric can work. Goes on like a hood without going over her face and the long scarf part can cross over her shoulders and be anchored by the coat. Still would cover her neck or could come up around her mouth/nose till out of the cold.

I am glad you found this,as I took photos to post.I really need it to anchor around her neck,so she can't twist it off.I added a piece to the front edge, to make it wider, but I see what my problem is. The width at the folded edge HAS to be the STRETCHY way.Mine was a bought scarf so it was already cut, and I didn't notice when I cut Averys,it wasn't with the stretch.

Yes, this is from a knitted one so you are right about where to put the stretch so it shapes to the head. You could also possibly line the hood part to make it warmer.

Maybe you could put a narrow casing along the top of the front edge and put elastic through, sew it on one end then pull it tight enough so it will stay snug then sew that end. It is a cute design and you sure need the warmth this week I'd like to have the measurements & directions.
