This question is for those of you that have a dedicated embroidery machine. I have a Brother DreamMaker single needle embroidery machine and I am setting up my dream crafting room. My very own Girl Cave! I am thinking of setting up my embroidery machine at counter height (table 36 inches high). I am wondering if other have done this. When the machine is this high I don't have to sit down to change a thread. I have it set up temporarily at this height and I am really liking it. Let me know what you suggest.

btw.. I love this site and all the wonderful help and ideas I have received so far.

I have 2 embroidery single needle machines, a sewing machine, and a serger in my sewing room----it is actually a bedroom that became a walkthrough room when the original owners added on to the house----BUT I only do ONE machine at a time----I have found that if I leave the room when a machine is stitching out a design---it messes up---so I decided that I would do ONE THING AT A TIME----I could get other stuff done while the machine is stitching out a design--but it is MORE TROUBLE to correct problems when I was not attentive than to just sit there and supervise----I do arm exercises while it is stitching out and work legs on a small exercise bike that sits under the desk while it is stitching but that is all!!!!Set up your room as it feels best to you now--and do not be afraid to change it around---switch it whenever YOU FEEL LIKE DOING IT---ENJOY!!!!

Welcome to the Cute Community, Maria, we hope you'll stick around and get lots more great ideas, and start giving some of your own as well!! Congratulations on your "Girl Cave"! Set it up how it works best for your needs, and you can't go far wrong. Uh, just don't nail anything down too tight, because this hobby is very addictive, and you'll probably end up changing things around several times. If you're like some of us, you'll not only collect fabric stash, thread colors and many kinds of stabilizers, you might start collecting sewing and/or embroidery machines as well, hee hee hee. I have a Janome 300E, which is an embroidery-only machine, one needle, and I would never be convinced to get a machine that does both sewing and embroidery. I also have several sewing-only machines, and a serger. My embroidery machine is actually set up on an old computer printer stand, which makes it lower than average, but that's the angle I can see best what I'm working on. My chair has wheels, I wheel between the embroidery thread changes and the sewing machine at normal height to do quilt sewing, curtain making, etc. That way I can do two things at once, and not have to get up. My fibromyalgia and arthritis make standing and walking hard some days, so I settle my cushion on my rolling desk chair and zip all over the room, even over to the computer desk--doing 3 things at once! There is no right or wrong way, only the way that's most convenient for you, the easiest and most productive, and the most FUN! If you think of it, put up a photo of your "Girl Cave" when you get it finished, so we'll all be envious of you, hee hee hee. Welcome again, and hugs, Marji

My machines are on secretary type desks with drawers on both sides. Since they sit on top they are a bit higher than recessed into the table. I'm short so the counter height would be a bit high for me. Like the others said make it suit your needs. Enjoy you newly arranged space.

Hi Maria, I have my emb machine set up on an old oak desk and I love it there. But my extra machine is set up on my cutting table, which is higher. I find that one awkward to use because of my vision. At the angle it is, even though it self threads, I find myself craning my neck a lot. But, truly, do what works for you. You might want to consider having some variety in what you decide to do, and keep it so you can change it if you decide you want it different in the future, and for additional machines you may add to your collection. :-)

I nearly did that when I reorganised a few weeks ago. In the end, I stuck with the normal table height as I use a gas lift office chair which moves around with me. If you like your temporary arrangement - stick with it!

I have mine set up high also, I find this much easier than a sitting height. It is easier for me to reach everything. It is easier to cut jumps between thread changes. So I agree with you..

Welcome this is a piece of my mess. This is almost a wall of it. Go with what feels right. I have like counter top done with furniture grade plywood here at 27 ins but I roll back and forth with computer chair which I can lower or higher to my comfort zone. My wall opposite is similar but with basket shelf lower under top full of different fabrics other than cotton... cotton types. Underneath is drawers and bolts of stablizer. It did not start this way lol it has grown. Each wall full and I have 55 gal drums with clothing and fabric friends have given me as I hope to work with rug weaving. Which is another room in process. The closet in my clubhouse is long and stuffed with ufo like unidentified flown in objects I need to go through again. I have too many crafts things. I have sewn pocket bag behind door with paints. Two other walls with shelfs and computers. Hubby uses his computer up in my as I already mentioned Club house as you call it girl cave. . I let him visit lol in his computer corner so he don't get to feeling lonely if he is having a bad tv night. He comes up to hear me laugh or growl. But with warning his woman will make her noise in her room. One of my machines which I won't go into how many will be purring along. Embroidery took hold of me about 8 years ago. So hint, hint this room has changed twice over that eight years. I think I am getting closer to building out building just for me. So bare in mind if you love it grow with it and Most of All ENJOY it. Hugs Mary

I think that's a brilliant idea, if you can do it then you should. Getting up and down from a seated position to change threads every few minutes is really annoying at times. Welcome to Cute, Maria

Do what works for you.If you are comfortable,I say go for it.When we were building our house,I made my kitchen counters higher and the bathroom too, since we built it ourselves we could do this.My BIL said but they aren't suppose to be that height, to which I replied, My back hurts bending down so much, I need them higher. I have a stool in the bath for the little ones and it works well for us....Welcome to CuteEmb, you will love it here.-Toogie

lucky you my builder refused to lower my kitchen cupboards as he said that we would not be able to sell. I told him that when I'm dead & gone I wouldn't care about reselling & the kitchen would need to be renewed anyway. the benches are at the regulated hught whick I couldn't change but the cabinet maker made me a moveable cupboard at the hight that I can work on. we changed the shelf & clothes rail ourselfves & added another shelf higher up which needs a step ladder to get too. good for storage. Plumber put the shower head lower & attached a sliding arm so anyone taller could push the head up. I think there are too many rules as we are not all average height.
