The Sympathetic Jewel
(Matthew 5:44)

This is illustrated by the story of a man who visited a jewelry store owned by a friend. His fried showed him magnificent diamonds and other splendid stone. Among these stones the visitor spotted one that seemed quite lusterless. Pointing to it, he said, “That stone has no beauty at all.”

His friend put the gem in the hollow of his hand and closed his fingers tightly around it. In a few moments, he uncurled his fingers.

What a surprise! The entire stone gleamed with the splendor of a rainbow. “What have you done to it? asked the astonished man.

His friend answered, “This is an opal. It is what we call the sympathetic jewel. It only needs to be gripped with the human hand to bring out its full beauty.”

People are very much like opals. Without warmth, they become dull and colorless. But “grasp” them with the warmth and love of God and they come alive with personality and humor. Unlike chameleons who simply adapt to their background, people who feel embraced by the love of God and His people come alive with colorful personalities all their own.
