About 3-4 weeks ago DH decided we needed a new bed. The mattress is so much thicker that I had to buy new bottom fitted sheets. My next problem was our top sheets (under the duvet), which did not have a good 'tuck in' at the bottom. This morning I bought some cotton material and I am now busy sewing on an extra 12" of material for a decent tuck in. Has any one else had this problem? Love our new bed :)

have you notice the fitted sheet always wears out first , so I buy 3 sets the same colour so if a fitted sheet wears out , I can turn a flat sheet into a fitted one & still have matching sets.

We do not have sheet sets here, except for duvet sets with matching pillowcase. We can buy all sheets and pillowcases separately.

When we built our new 2 storey house we got a new queen bed but had to make sure the mattress was a certain thickness because of the stairs newel post ,made it very hard to get it up to the bedroom. The removalist had some fun getting the old one upstairs ,its still there in the guest room

I have a Queen bed, but when I needed new sheets I got King sized ones. The first were by accident, because they were 800 thread count Egyptian Cotton, with 4 pillowcases, on sale for $14 USD. Yes, that's right, I didn't leave out any numbers. I figured it was K mart's mistake, I don't think I ever checked out so fast in my life, hee hee hee. You can't get dust rags for that price, I figured I'd cut them down, they'd shrink, whatever, they were MINE. Egyptian cotton! 800 thread count. They didn't shrink, I didn't cut anything down, I just tuck under quite a bit, and like them just fine. Haven't fought with a Queen size sheet since, because my mattress is really deep as well. Once I did get a set of things to keep the fitted corners actually under the corners, think they were called "sheet suspenders" or something like that. Piece of elastic, and on each end a thingy like we used to have on girdles or garter belts to hold stockings up (oh, really dating myself there!). You'd hook in the sheet like you would your stocking on each end, and the elastic kept it from popping off the corner, it just couldn't without breaking the elastic. Hope you can picture what I'm talking about, anyway. But I won't do anything but King size for the Queen bed ever again. And only high thread count cotton. Microfibre is only fit for dust rags. Any idea how much cat hair microfibre can collect in one day? And there's no way to get it off!! Hugs, Marji

Sheets are getting smaller & smaller all the time, somewhere along the line they have forgotten that there are usually 2 bodies in the bed as well.
In the past I have bought the size larger in a flat sheet & often mitre the corners of a flat sheet To make a fitted one.

I do remember the sheet 'suspenders'

Yes, all of the matresses are so much deeper now. It is very hard to raise a corner for a fitted sheet. Just get rid of the old fitted bottoms. The flat top sheet can be used in making a dust ruffle. Lay it on the mattress and trim away all that hangs over leaving enough for seam allowance. Add your dust ruffle to the bottom and to the sides. Cheaper than buying sheeting fabric. I learned this from a decorator years ago. I also learned to make the round decorator table covers at a fraction of the purchased cost. I am working on two at present. Kay

It does have a pillow topper and the mattress never needs turning - wonderful!!!!

Not so much of a problem for me with sheets as with blankets. I have king size blankets on our queen size bed to give ample room for tucking in at the bottom and over-hang on both sides.

It is nearly impossible to purchase sheets outside of sets. If ever located, I believe I'll give king size top sheets a try.

Where do you live? - we can easily buy any size sheet - in any colour here in S. Africa.

My hubby insists on flannel--year round. He claims to have exceptionally sensitive skin. ;)

I have had sheet problems forever. I don't think any of my sheet sets have ever been the same size as the others and I've often engineered them to help making the bed easier and to help us get a better sleep.

Our older fitted bottom sheets don't fit our new gel-flex bed (I call it our new Space Rocket Bed) with its 43 cm wall and I am considering stitching in a band at least six inches wide half way down the wall part of the sheet to get more life from otherwise perfect sheets. Just have to do it - the sheets are huge and I'm small and shrinking!
In the 'old days' women used to cut the sheets down the centre and bring the sides to the middle to make them last longer..... at least the centre seam showed where the centre of the sheet was when they were making the bed. I really hate it when I can't get the sheet even on both sides of the bed, especially when I'm the one being 'short-sheeted'.
It makes perfect sense to add extra length if the sheets need it.
The alternative would be to use co-ordinating fabric and sew it to the top of the sheet for a very pretty turn-back.

My mother-in-law had a sewing machine which was only ever used for "turning" sheets!

debswebster by debswebster 12 Nov 2013

What a lovely idea Alma :) - never thought of that!!

When I was growing up my grandmother used to turn sheets 'sides to middle' with beautiful flat felled seams. That was for the single beds.

Not sure how short your sheets are but I have simply used the "fitted sheet" idea at the bottom. Take in corners at correct depth, then added elastic all round the bottom - guaranteed to stay put!!
If you are interested I have a useful tip on Duvet covers. They are bulky to wash, so I get a piece of fabric I really fancy and make one a single piece the size of a normal duvet. Also buy enough fabric to make large Continental pillow slips and even matching cushion covers. I put this over my Duvet cover and only wash that instead of the whole duvet.(I also use a sheet under my duvet cover) Saves time, dries fast, easy to iron and I can change my cover and cushions as often as I please!

If you want to make Duvet covers, just buy two flat sheets in the colour or pattern you like. I sew a zipper along the top and then leave two openings on the bottom so you can put your hand in to straighten the cover over the duvet..
I do find top flat sheet in the new sheet sets are too short on the sides, so there is no tuck in, but I think its so they don't show under the duvet.

I also have an embroidered sheet over the duvet - sole purpose is for my pekingese in the summer when his basket is too hot and he wants to sleep between us under the ceiling fan!!!

Hi Sarah,
I've not experienced that problem as I buy extra depth fitted sheets and for the top sheet - (on our Queen sized bed) I use the King Size flat sheets that we used to have on our older King Bed (we got rid of it as it was far too large). I also like to have a top sheet as we often get too hot to have the Doona on top of us. I've been kicking off the Doona over the past couple of nights as we've had quite humid weather. I'm actually sitting here perspiring, Trev said there's something wrong with me as he reckons it's cool. It is only 19C but we've had a quite stormy day and it's still humid even now at 10.00pm!! Love Chris

We also have a queen size bed. I sympathise with you as we are also experiencing very humid weather - I hate it!!!

Much easier to not use top sheets! We just use the duvet in a cover. Fitted sheets never seem to be quite deep enough to fit our mattress, so I always buy cotton jersey ones. The don't last as long, but they stretch to fit beautifully.
Sweet dreams!

I use a top sheet under the duvet for a couple of reasons 1) Like Chris we also have terribly hot weather and 2) I wash the sheets every week but the duvet cover once a month. Rather iron a sheet than a duvet cover.

I am so pleased there is someone else. We can get extra long sheets but there is absolutely nothing wrong with my present sheets as they are not very old.
