30 May 2013: Feeling down? Try a move Down Under.

I've been seeking an explanation as to the sheer number of Aussies who, as valued members of Cute, replied to the recent post on membership location. More particularly, I was interested to find out what makes them all such a happy group of people. And now I have my answer.

According to a recently published international league table of 'happiness,' Australia has been ranked No.1 in the world. The top ten in descending order, are: Australia, Sweden, Canada, Norway, Switzerland, United States, Denmark, Netherlands, Iceland, and the United Kingdom well down in 10th. place.

It's all right for some.....lol

Hi Dennis,

As a lot of us Aussies have said it's not always a bed of roses. We still have our issues to contend with, but we do tend to think, oh well, everything will be o.k. mate! It's that sort of attitude that has set us apart as fun loving larrikins - BUT don't forget that most of our forefathers who came to this country were convicts from England.

We also had an enormous influx of German immigrants to South Australia around 1838 and of course we had a lot of German, Greek, Irish, Italian, Norwegian, British, Polish and Yugoslav migrant workers for our world famous Snowy Mountain Scheme and most of those immigrants arrived under an assisted migration scheme. We are now known as a multi-cultural society and welcome all people who genuinely want to come and live here and become an Australian citizen.

So as one of our famous CRICKET commercials says Come on Aussie, come on, come on! Come on Aussie, come on!!!!! (just another little bit of Cricket jargon for you!!!!) Love Chris

If link doesn't work - just go to YOUTUBE and type in Australian Cricket Team - C'mon Aussie c'om.

Forgot Link sorry!

Well, Mrs. Minx, thank you for the link. I shall have recurring nightmares now, having watched and listened to that!! I see that Ricky is over here and reporting on the Aussie cricket team (and suggesting that he would be ready for a call-up if one of your lads happens to break a finger), and of course we also have Shane (or at least I think it's him) advertising on-line poker and slimming products. All that said, if the weather over here doesn't improve soon, it will be a case of "rain stopped play" and we will all be disappointed!

My dad worked on the Snowy Mountains Scheme as well as Woomera Rocket range in SAus, Chris. He was from Estonia, a displaced person, and had to repay his passage.

Well, now, I have to add my tuppence-worth here....

Us Aussies have a very quirky sense of humour to start with - one that often escapes the broad populace of the world. It can set us apart and have the rest of the world wondering what on earth it is that we find so amusing.
Second, we have an inborn sense of mateship. It's the men who call each other 'mate' but the women are just as 'matey' and will stand by another Aussie in times of need regardless of situation.

It's hard to keep a good Aussie down, too. Have you ever seen TV footage of those Aussies whose homes have been destroyed by fire or flood? They just get up again and start over. And, those Aussie 'mates' who've never shown their faces before will be there with their tools and hands to help their stricken 'mate' through any disaster.

Furthermore, despite some very ugly things that happen and are not in an Aussie's favour and make me less than proud to be one, most of us are just ordinary, average Aussies, going about our everyday business and making the best of the things. That's not so hard to do, really, in a country like Australia. We are blessed and we don't need to venture far from our own homes to have that proven.

I wish I could share this wonderful country with you all.
AlmaG.

Well Alma, that was quite wonderful and I so enjoyed the touch of humour. If there is ever a free vote for the job of promoting Australia, you may be assured of my vote.

It isn't always a bed of roses here (OZ) but we do have the attitude it will be right mate and it usually is. I think most Aussie just get on with life and enjoy what they have...just saying.

I like it here in the UK - if I lived anywhere else, I'd have to find new things to complain about!

Funny :). If you lived here, OZ, I am sure we could find a few things for you to complain about...and make you feel at home.

Don't know who did this survey but we are not happy all of the time. I woke this morning feeling down but just have to work through it. I know I feel a lot better when the sun is shining.

I'm pretty sure you'd brighten up the moods of those in your own little part of the world, Dennis!

I don't have any first hand knowledge of the aussie happiness levels (unfortunately I've never been), but I do know that the ones I've met here are some of the absolutely sweetest, kindest, most giving folks I've ever run across.
I must have somehow missed the post you are referring to.....gone to see. ;)

As a possie ( a Pomm who became an Aussie) of 49 years standing, let me assure you this is the greatest country in the world. After reading about the recent troubles in the streets of both England and America I rest my case. Maybe it is the sunshine which lightens our hearts..........who knows???. Don't tell everybody though they will all want to come !!!!............CaniGran..........

Do you think we need to do a 'Billy Connolly' and mention the sharks, Blue ringed octopus, huge spiders and lots of snakes about now? LOL. Sadly there are also places in Aus providing a few personal challenges to people, but no surprise it's been called 'The Lucky Country' for years.
