Hope for the spring, my foot! We are in full spring. Why am I sitting here DL-ing and reading, when I could be out cleaning out my flower beds as scheduled? Because I have just killed the first snake of spring and decided I needed a break from raking off the flower beds. My heart is still racing! Have a great day. And may all your flowerbeds be snakeless.

I think it is a shame that you had to kill the snake. I do get scared when my little pekingese gets too near I must say but DH usually comes to the rescue and chases them away. Luckily we do not see them very often.

Are you allowed to kill snakes? Here in Australia it is against the law. Large fines apply.

Oh
I live in Southern California and rattle snakes are a problem. When we first moved to our home we had open hills and no one around undeveloped land. We had coyotes, raccoons, and snakes.
I remember gardening very close to a huge one and didn't even know it. MY family gently called me and then told me. I just about fainted.
LOL :) Thank goodness we have guys on our street that take care of
it for us- they collect the rattles. Now the land is developed so not as
many if any show up.
Now its a gopher eating my plants I'm looking for. It is 95 F out there
so I'm making Pina Colada ice cream.

Well, I'd rather have butterflies than snakes!!!!

A 12"+ young brown snake scuttled away from beneath my hand earlier in summer. I was told he was just passing through and I have to be satisfied with that. Why 'he'??? Because I want to believe that he was looking for a mate and not the mate looking for a nice cosy nesting spot beneath the house to have her babies!!!

Had a few come to close to my hands, If you buy moth balls and toss them in the garden add a little water that will chase them away till the moth balls dissolve as long as you can put up with the smell.

On a pond in Alabama. My cats usually patrol the yard and leave scents that snakes don't appreciate.

Carolyn, that's where my first heart attack would occur! I can take snakes, but rodents just make my insides run as fast as they can to catch my skin!!!!!

Garter snakes don't bug me -- Rats alive or dead ALWAYS bug me! lol

Yikes...that was brave. What a damper to your schedule. Maybe tomorrow then, but this time make a lot of scuffling noises to warn them you're coming armed.
