As a formal aerobic trainer I suggest: aren't there any fitness programms on Tv you can perhaps watch and join the exercise at home? mostly they are in a low level so many people can participate the exercises. But most of all watch what you eat, don't eat something late in the evening because these calories are not used anymore when you go to sleep. And drink enough water. Also, try to take a daily walk in your own tempo(pace) . Hope you can do something with my comment. Hugs for you :)

Carolyn, I have 2 bad hip replacements, some days are better than others. I'm also top heavy with short gut so tummy sticks out. every morning before getting out of bed remove pillows & stretch with hands above your head, toes pointing stretching out as far as you can & hold for as long as you can. Repeat a few times. also do it standing & while sitting at your machine. Remember not too slouch. it is hard to remember to not slouch so try to pull your upperbody up straight & stretch many times. Run you aircon on a colder setting so you need to move to keep warm, your body (insides) will move to warm you. drink ice water so you shiver, a lot of muscles will get a workout. also the hardest one in the winter but lovely in summer is to finish your shower with cold water. goodluck Wendy

I was just thinking about you and how what your test results were.
I've never cared for the ww or other stuff like that as it's costly and a lot of people lose and then as soon as they come off the diet they gain it back. Best thing is to eat smaller portions and eat oftener, lots of water and then the walking. Everyone has given you such good advice. Seems most of us think basically the same way!
One other thing. With myself, it didn't help until I found out I had food sensitivities /allergies. Then after cutting these out I lost over 60 lbs. Now it's harder to get more off. I have a Tony Little gazelle and it's easier on the knees, but I haven't been able to use it for a bit as the livingroom (which is where it is) has been in a turmoil - as can't do much for walking outside in winter.
Good luck.

Spring is here and I need to quit smoking. I hope to succeed without gaining more weight, so I am with you! I will walk a little faster and look into a pedometer, although I am not sure if walking around the house counts.

Boy do I know how you feel. With my hip problem and not being able to walk for the last 18 months, I put on 25lbs. I am now trying to get it off again. I think the older we get the harder it is too lose. My advice is to get yourself a pedometer, this measures how active you are in your day. I try to walk at least 20 minutes per day (yes this will mean one less project for you to do but it is worth it lol) and I sometimes manage 30 depending on the pain lever. I wear my pedometer and it motivates me to move so that I can increase my step count. I try to increase my level everyday until I will reach 10,000. One of the fallbacks of embroidery is that we tend to stay inactive while sitting most of the time. Of course there is the food factor but that is the easier part for me, you just need to cut out the fats and increase the fruits and veggies. It really is all about excerise in my opinion and believe me I have had lots of practice at this weight loss/gain problem.
We could start a group on cute and help to motivate each other, share recipes etc.
Good luck girl you can do this (don't aim to high, start by saying I want to lose 5lbs then another and another),
Hugs
Michelle

Carolyn this may sound harsh but the best way to loose weight is "sensible eating". Costs nothing. Go on the diabetic diet and it will work for you. No sugary foods. Hugs Marg.

My doctor says the best is less in more out so drink lots of water.Small portions is the best guide to the amount you should eat. Use a small dinner plate that does not hold as much. Good luck

Hi Carolyn, I know what you mean about some of the weight programs, they are expensive..I went on line looking for something for myself and found this (it's Free)...looks good, I am going to give it a try, hopefully the receipes are some that my son and grandson will also eat, as I can't afford two separate menus...will keep my fingers crossed for you and hope you do the same for me..GOOD LUCK!

I found them for sale at a closeout store so you might find them online for a better price. Personally I thought they tasted awful. Better option is make dinners from the basic healthy ingredients and eat less. Frozen foods are too processed with preservatives I can't pronounce and cause problems for people over 40-50 years of age.

Dear Carolyn,

I see Powagrl has mentioned MY FITNESS PAL. My dear friends here in Newcastle have done it and are raving about it! It's an easy programme to follow. Drink lots of water at least 8 glasses a day to get rid of toxins and do daily exercise, either walking or swimming - and record everything you put in your mouth! It's amazing how the calories/kilojoules add up. Love and blessings Chris

Carolyn - this is something very close to my heart. Christmas 2011 I decided enough is enough. I knew that the only reason I was over weight was that I ate too much!!! We had an overseas trip booked for May and I was determined to loose weight. I cut out bread and potatoes - still do not eat bread or cakes (boohoo), used a smaller plate and by the time we went away I had lost 15 kgs. It is nearly a year later and I have lost 17 kgs in all. I walk early morning 5 days a week for an hour with a friend. I wish you well and you will feel so much better. Loosing weight is the easy part it is keeping it off that is the hard thing. Hugs Sarah.

The best most helpful weightloss tip I ever got (and stayed with) is "drink a full 8 oz glass of Ice water 30 minutes before each meal." Your body burns calories heating the ice water to normal body temperature and it causes you to began to feel full before you start eating your meal.
All of the other suggestions given here are great, too. You will have to find the ones you can do and stay with.

If you can afford a handsome physical trainer to come to your house every morning, you can get your exercise chasing him up the street. ha!

If you drink water every time you feel hungry -- it is supposed to correct many things.
The physical trainer sounds VERY nice! Where do you find the good-looking ones?
Carolyn, I may have to walk to your place instead. lol

Dear Carolyn, I wish you the best of luck. I am right there with you. All of the advice you have been given sounds great. It is easier said than done though. Last year my daughter lost about 90 pounds. She has alot of determination. I tried the same plan she used earlier this year with my other daughter. I lost 13 pounds in 3 weeks. Sounds great but I was miserable and have already gained back 9 pounds. It is very difficult to lose weight and keep it off. If you need a parter to correspond and compare with, I'm available. Hugs, Susan

The paid versions are too pricey.
You need to walk for 20 minutes every day. Make sure you are walking fast enough to increase your heart rate but slow enough to still be able to speak.
Do stretches and push-ups (you can cheat in push-ups by starting using the stairs).
Muscle burns calories!
Make sure you finish eating before 6pm and nothing later. Lunch should be your "big" meal but do NOT skip meals. That backfires! Always start your day with a healthy lower calorie breakfast.
Snack on grapes r other fruits/veggies and drink LOTS of water -- at lest 8 full glasses per day. Drink a FULL glass or two BEFORE every meal. It will help you feel full. Eat slow -- chewing every bite longer than usual.
You also need a buddy. Someone who will keep you on track and encourage you to meet your goals.
Also, take a piece of string or thread and measure your target area. Cut the string and stay off the scale (too depressing) -- give yourself a week or two of workout and watch your string cross over itself as you lose.
One more thing -- as you sit to sew, exercise your tummy by flexing those muscles and sucking it all in...hold it in for a good long count and relax. Repeat.
Good luck!

Dear Carolyn, I would like to give you a little word of advise, that was given to me by a fat/stomach [not his size, but what he deals in] specialist, ,1. it is next to impossible, for a middle aged or menopausal woman to lose weight, and crash or fad diets can be extremely dangerous, your brain will protect the fat,as if it were another organ!,your eyes, hair bones and nails will be sacrifised first! In middle age you will not spring back from any damages done. 2. your kidneys automatically detox your body,to force them,by taking on too much clear water,is damaging! a]your body tells you when it needs fluid,b] 1 glass of plain water a day is fine, after that put something in it eg;a sqeeze of lemon juice.3.never go on diet without first starting supplements, vitamines, omega 3 and calcium, you need extra with age. 4.exercise with age in mind! walkin is always great, but joints are not what they were! and damage takes a lot longer to heal if at all!
So be careful, please, cut back on fatty foods etc,but be gentle on yourself, don't mess up what good health you have. regards lesley
