Where on your computer do you save/store your embroidery designs?

When my computer crashed last week, I had to do a complete system restore. I did a backup on my external drive but All of my single designs are gone, including everything I digitized. The ones in the zip files are still here. It saved the photos of the designs, but not the designs. I'm not a Happy Camper right now.

If you need to do a system restore. Rather save all your designs in “MY DOCUMENTS” this will keep them intact and recovery is easier. Advice from my IT.
Widows will keep current documents and designs and not restore to an older date before any new DL..
I backup onto DVD quite regularly. EXT HD are known to also crash.

I am so terribly sorry that this has happened to you. I do a back up once a week on my external hard drive. For all my 'precious' designs I also store on disks to be doubly sure. Sarah.

When I download they move into my download Folder. From there I categorize them on my C drive in a folder called Embroidery which contains the categories. I back them up manually once a week on a external hard drive. In the zipped files I remove the formats and info I don't need and save them on a USB stick and at a later date burn them on a DVD. .
I don't trust the automatic back up because for a long time I had folders that could not be removed, renamed or anything and the automatic backup would hang up at that place. .

My designs are all on external drives. I have also backed them up on DVD's. I am so sorry this has happened to you. How frustrating it must be.

My son fixed my drive into 2 segments. One for system files and program files only. The other part for data. I do not run internet except from the data section. I also m have an external hard drive. On my data section I created an EMBROIDERY folder and my sites as sub folders. That way I know where the designs come from. Works for me.

My son says this makes it harder for bad stuff to disable my machine as it can't get to system or program files.

I have two external hard drives that I use. I also have my computer hard drive divided into two sections and have a backup on both. Then I use Buzz Explore and have everything on there as well. Hopefully it is all safe. Hugs, Mary

oohh just to add I dont store them on my desktop, because i have over 400gb of design and clipart, and it would slow my pc down to much.

I keep mine in a folder on the desktop. I did do a backup, but what I don't understand, is why did it save all the designs that are in a zip file, but not the single designs? All the photos of the single designs are there, but not the designs.

Even all my bought designs from Emb. Library. I will have to go there and download all of them again. So thankful that they allow us to do that!

Thank you all for posting

I feel for you. Been there. I save to my desk top (EmbroideryDesigns) in a folders where the design came from for copy right purposes - and also on 2--usb storage unit (stick) It takes extra time, but all you need is one crash. If Computer crashes or a Usb stick you always have a back up. After they are unzipped --put into folders and subfolders --they get burnt to a CD or DVD

I do much as bumble bee does. I have a folder on my "C" drive called My Designs. Within that folder there are sub folders with major titles such as Animals. Then in that one there are more folders of different animals and so on. That way the designs in the folders are a bit more managible. The smaller the folder size the less time it takes my emb machine to open the designs. I use a USB cable directly connected to the computer.

Ouch
I save mine in a separate folder and have subfolders within the main embroidery folder and when I backup I know exactly where every file is
I think we need to periodically make sure all those files are okay on the external drive too and some say to backup up the external drive too because they fail too.
My external drive has software that supposedly updates automatically
every day but I dont like the way it indexes the files-to hard to find so
I do manual backups of my main file and it keeps it all togetherl. Not
sure if this helps at all but thats what I'm doing.
