Ok, I am feeling pretty dumb here - but, could someone explain "Sugar Skulls" to me? What do they mean? Thanks, Laura

I always wondered exactly when The Day of the Dead was, and after reading through the very good articles on the link, I find it's my birthday! Nov 2. I knew it was All Souls Day, but never put 2 and 2 together. A day to remember and celebrate the lives of passed loved ones. Cool. I might even do a few designs now, for me. They certainly are not creepy, and we all have one, don't we?

I have always wondered if they were related to the Day of the Dead, which is celebrated in Mexico right around Halloween, or All Hallow's Eve. There is just something about them that make me feel uncomfortable, so I don't download them. I just don't think I'd ever stitch one. But, I know that is a cultural item, and some people absolutely love them. They are very pretty. Thanks for asking this question :-)

I have attended the Atlanta Dia de los Muertos, which is a lot of vendors selling all kinds of food, typical Latin dancing, and some of the more creative grave decoration on actual memorials with pictures, foods, drinks (yes all kinds) and even cigarettes. Don't we all have some ritualistic business that would seem strange to other cultures? ;)

Oh, I simply didn't know what it was. Hugs, Laura*

Laura, I wasn't chastising, I just found it strange but then started thinking about our customs like hiding Easter eggs to honor the death of our Lord???? That's what I meant. ;)

You are right - I wonder what other countries think of some of our customs!! Hugs, Laura

We bring in artificial green pine trees, and put lights on them, and all these little trinkets to represent parts of the celebration of our Lords birth. When you think about that, in another culture's perspective, that's pretty strange!
