Wow, I never thought it was possible to sew through your finger, but I was wrong..Still can't figure out how it happened..one minute I was just easing down a piece of fleece in the hoop, and the next thing I knew, wham, right through the middle of my index fingernail...Scary! Fortunately, the needle point went clean through and was poking out of the underside of my finger so I could pull it out...otherwise, I think it would have been a trip to urgent care...anyone else done something wacky like this before? I think I'll be a little more careful from now on...What a waste of a brand new needle!

I have had the needle go through my nail and vinger of index vinger twice. Luckily my husband was there to pull it out, but believe me, I will never let it happen again, because now my vingernail is growing with a mark through the middle (permanent) for some reason. Pretty sore too.
Hope your vinger heals well quickly.
Hugs
Marietta

Hope it isn't too sore today. Goodness that had to hurt and scare you to death. It can happen so fast.

I did that when I first started sewing over 50 yrs ago. It went through my finger and came out again. I still remember it! Hurt like crazy, but didn't cry out or anything as my mom had said I could use her machine but if I got the needle in my finger I wouldn't be allowed to use it - therefore, kept quiet! Only thing is, she knew but figured if I kept quiet like that I mus have really wanted to sew, so she pretended she didn't know until many yrs. later.
Hope you heal fast - keep an eye on it!

...almost good as new...strange, but it never really hurt...just startled me a bit...scariest thing was pulling the broken needle out from the finger side...

Yeeeeouch!!!!! OOOOH just reading about it made me feel sick. Please be very careful, puncture wounds can become life threatening if they aren't seen to.
I do hope you don't have any problems from the injury.
Hugs n blessings, Meganne

hands up. I went to grab a thread out of the way and yes, right through the index finger. it was more of a fright than any real pain. I think it is because it happens so fast you don't feel it. my needle didn't break but it came up again and stopped. I NEVER do anything with the machine running now. it is so easy to stop and start again.

I grew up sewing on a treadle sewing machine. My brother was also very enthusiastic. He got it going, and ended up sewing the full length of his finger before he could get it to stop. The worst part was sitting with a seam ripper pulling the very perfect stitches out! Didn't even break the needle.
Did you throw the timing off on your machine? I hope you mend quickly.

You poor darling. I did it about 20 years ago on my mum's old sewing machine. I screamed so loud my Nanna almost had a heart attack and Dad had to pull the needle out with a pair of plyers. Now I'm always carefull. Hope you heal soon. xx

Typical sewer!! you hate breaking the needle ha ha, yes I did this many years ago and had to wake my mother from sleep at 6am one morning and gave her a pair of plysers to pull out the needle which broke when I pulled from the sewing machine, just washed and put on a bandage and went back to sewing LOL

Been there, done that, several years back, but it's always a good reminder when someone else does it, encourages us to be more aware of what we're doing.

Ouch! My sympathies to you, your finger, nail and needle! Easy enough to do when we're not thinking too clearly or we are rushing. Hope it heals up well and quickly.

Ouch!! you poor thing, good thing it wasn't more serious. I have sewn through my finger fortunately on my sewing machine not my embroidery machines, I have come close to getting my fingers in the way of my embroidery machine because I always have to do stuff at a million miles an hour.

Wow!! I am so sorry. You asked if anyone else has done such. A tiny piece of needle still resides in the index finger of my left hand. The doc tried to get it all but this small spot remains after 20 years. Good luck and I hope you never have another problem.

by sewhappyinstitches 12 Aug 2012

Oh no! I get chills just thinking of it. I've heard of others doing it. I'm always afraid it's something I could do. Fortunately so far, I haven't. When I was in Jr. Hi School, a girl in our sewing class sewed part-way into her hand and panicked and sewed back out! Now that's bad. Hope it heals quickly.

Autsch that sound very painful. Like Jo I admire that you were so calm. Hope you get your tetanus shot not too long ago? That is always my fear: To get an infection. Wish you a quick healing for your finger :o)
Greetings, Bettina

Eww. You sound so calm! I'll say lucky, could have hit the bone. Keep your fingers out of the way and use a bamboo shishkabob skewer. Has pointed ends and is not metal, so if the needle hits it, it will not break so easily.
