I would like to know what makes Jacobean designs special. They look so pretty and I have downloaded a few, but don't know if it is special threads or just bright colours that make them distinctive

I believe it is the bright colors and the style of embroidery - welcome jillsmith to the 'CUTE' family. *4U

Jacobean is a style of embroidery. Originally done by hand in silk or wool. It was used in tapestries, bed hangings and to decorate clothing. The designs were stilized floral and animals. Hope this helps.

I ,too, love Jacobean designs. I think that it's their bold design as well as their bright colors that make them special.

It was originally a type of crewel embroidery from the 17th century... I think they most often used highly dyed 2 ply wool thread. I think today it is more about style than color but it often looks best with vivid colors (probably not available back then!) pn darker fabrics.

Thank you all for your help. This is the first site I have posted to and it is so active. I ask a question, go to bed, and in the morning I dig thru the night's activity, and there is my answer!

Just use your usual embroidery thread. It's the colours that make them so pretty. Originally Jacobean embroidery was done in silk or quite often in wool. Rayons (the usual embroidery thread) are a good substitute for silk. For woollen thread you might have to adjust the density of the stitching as this thread is thicker.

To me its the bright colours & bold stitching

So you just sew them with your usual embroidery threads?
