I have a problem with the labels on my spools of thread falling off. Some I can just write the mfg. and color number on the spool somewhere with a permanent marker, but on others, there just isn't a place to write. I tried stuffing the label inside, but when I place them on the spool holder, it gets pushed out or blocked. It is especially annoying when it falls of and I don't notice. I can usually identify the mfg. by the spool type, but the color number is impossible. How do you keep track of the thread info when the labels fall off? Any ideas?

I buy a thread guide. It has a sample of the thread along with the number. When I get close to needing another spool I just take the spool to my thread guide and match the color and make an order.

With the metro threads I used my label maker - as in the picture. For the ones from threadart (the first ME thread I had bought), I used a sharpie (as had been suggested on here) and wrote underneath.

I think your idea of using a label maker is wonderful. I think I need to invest in one.

On the metro thread, I write the # at the little space at the top and on the bottom rim with a thin sharpie. The bottom, I do name and #. Works great Thread Art, I put the # underneath with thin sharpie This has worked for me.

I meant it "does" work...some spool are just wound on a tube like spool and it's not smooth.

Or you could write the color number on a piece of HUgo's tape and then wrap it around, the only problem with this is you would need to match the right tape to thread & I'm sure I would goof it up...LOL My problem is I like it on the top so I can see the number when I have them sitting in a pull out drawer. I have yet to figure out a way to store my threads so they are easy to find and don't take up space. I love the wood thread racks, but they do take up a lot of wall space and if you don't keep them covered with clear plastic they can get dusty.
Muffy :)

When my labels come off I put double sided tape on the label and press the label inside the cone.

GOOD IDEA!! I can see this one working.

That'd work with the bigger cones. But I can't get them inside the smaller ones! I usually only buy 1000m ones.

I take a sharpie and write the color number on the snap closure. I have the Metro threads, and their color numbers are on top, so I take them and put the sticky top on the inside of the spool, and write the number with the sharpie. So far, it has worked well.

This is what I do also. Should still be there when I go to reorder.
