I have several turtle neck sweaters they don't look good on me anymore I made one into a cardigan, I cut the top of the neck off and added a bias binding in silk or polyster (the kind that has a sheen to it) they turned out great so pleased with them. I wasn't sure if it could be done also I can now wear them, this summer under my jackets so many places have air that Im always needing something on my arms. If the fabric is very streachy I found you could use some wash-a-way stablizer on the top and bottom to allow it to feed through your machine. Then cut close and wash the neck of you sweater. I hope someone can use my experience if you need more info let me know.

Thanks for the great idea~!!!!!
I have some nice Christmassy turtlenecks I bought in America at the unbelievable price of $3 each.
Being short of stature, and shrinking, I am now hard put to see above the neck. I keep trying the beautiful red one on but then I bang into the wardrobe for want of good visual..... :]
I, for one, will be operating on them as you have described and getting some use from them at last.

I can't imagine making my turtle necks into something else, but thanks for sharing the idea :) I love them warm around my neck, and don't care so much what they look like, when I'm mostly here sewing anyway! It's just turned Winter here, of course.

this is a great idea. the turtle necks make me feel like i am suffocating. this will be a good idea to use all those i have. my sister and i have always split the neck down the center and they lay like a collar.

Sound verrryy interesting. You cannot find a decent cardigan in the stores, sweaters now seem to be for show, not warmth! Can't wait to see.

I remove the turtle neck collar and where the old stitches were I but the new bias binding or in thee case of one I just cut the old T neck collar into a small strip and pressed in in the form of bias and sewed it on, one the fabric was so streachey the it would not sew well so I used a stablizer(wash-a-way kind) top and bottom of the neck it helped the machine to sew.
