I've seen meganne's design for a stoma pad, and I guess I just don't understand the purpose of them, besides cleanliness. I know at least two people with ports in their bellies, one for feeding, one for dialysis, and they don't have pads. Would they benefit from the pads? Are they re-usable? Sorry to be so clueless.

I know lots of families who have little ones who are tube fed. Unlike adults they are forever leaking and blowing them out, or having to have another one put in, or a different type of button. They get really sore at the site, and need to be kept dry. The ones you can buy aren't nearly as nice as these, and they are hard to find, and of course expensive. What a wonderful design for these families. These could be a mission all in themselves!

A lady i know has a granddaughter with a feeding tube (she is one of a set of triplets!). These might be really useful for her. Thanks for adding to my knowledge.

It helps in reducing irritation at the stoma site and stabilizing the tracheostomy tube and catching any discharge. They can be cleaned in diluted hydrogen peroxide/water and dried but these were designed to be thrown away since they are infant sized and would shrink a lot when washed. I believe it is recommended to use 100% cotton type fabrics when making them.

Ok. Thanks for the info. The people that I know with the ports don't have discharge from the sites, so I was clueless about the pads!

I agree that I hope if that cutie still needs them she will see this and answer. I know there are a lot of us out there that would be glad to help make some and send to her - especially if they need to be thrown away after each use. She may go through a lot of them.
