What do you say to an eight year old who just found out that Santa, Easter Bunny and the tooth fairy aren't real? She was devestated. I am too. I'm to far away to give a hug. Hugs & Stitches, Liz

I think whoever told her all that should be ashamed. I'm 73 and I still believe in Santa and the Easter Bunny. Never did believe in the tooth fairy. LOL/Lillian

Discovering the truth is one of the best parts. The truth is that we each take turns being Santa, Easter Bunny and my all time favorite the Tooth Fairy. Give her a turn at making the magic happen and let her see how much fun it is!

Cry with her, tell her you love her more than ever. Oh, and she will still get lots of presents. Poor baby. Another lesson of sometimes life hurts.

For some reason my two always believed that Santa etc. was mom and dad so I didn't have to go through that with them. At Easter I had dipped those plastic eggs with shrink wrap egg covers and every Easter morning there was a trail of those eggs from each bedroom to their basket. For them it was all about a day of fun and rehiding the plastic eggs. Talk to her parents and see if they can make it a day just like her other Easter's and her knowing shouldn't change what they do.

Liz, when my children approached me with this about Santa, we had a talk about how blessed it is to be able to give. As we grow older, Santa doesn't necessary come to adults; then I told them "If you don't ruin MY fun, I won't ruin yours!" With a grin, we both agreed. To this day if one of my older kids is at the house overnite on Christmas Eve, "Santa" has a stocking under the tree for them that morning. As for the Easter bunny, we were so rushed on Sun. morning we never started that; however, I did go into the bedroom, assemble the baskets, then came HOPPING down the hall singing "Here Comes Peter Cottontail"! Yes, my daughter does that now for her girls. My hopping days are over, but we still laugh about it. Tooth fairy? Same explanation...it's a fun thing we all like to do! Please tell them to not ruin other children's fun by telling them who leaves the gifts. Some believe longer than others...or pretend they do!

You might try telling her that as long as she believes they will always come to see her. Sometimes they just carry on as if they did not find out and pretend to believe for years.

Glad so many of you agree. This worked for my son. We continued to pretend for many years and it was such fun. I was disappointed about the child telling him. Every child needs to do a lot of pretending as they grow up. They learn a lot from pretending.
