I have been asked to embroider on neck ties. I am reluctant because as I see it my options would be to sew through all of the layers or unpick the tie and restitch it. Has anyone embroidered on neck ties? Any hints or tips?

Alice.

I never did one yet, but would definitely undo the back and restitch it. It looks more professional.

Good luck I personally have not thought of doing it but I just might have to go to the thrift store and find a couple and try it, just for fun, we never know what we n=might do next with our wonderful machines. I say go for it. Maybe try an old one first he does not care for and he may like it refurbished. Sara

I have done several, yes, by all means undo the seam at the back a little ways and hand stitch closed when finished. The first one I did I embroidered through the "lining" but it sort of pulled when finished. The next 3 I did not include that lining and I was much happier! I used a tearaway and did a really nice fluer de lis that was so awesome my son-in-law even told his boss that I did it! Linda

Hi Alice
Great question.. I too unpicked the back seam.. then I hooped tearaway and pinned the tie to the tearaway.. work fab.. also the stitches were large ones and easy to unpick and re sew.. also had to do this on a jacket recently.. took me 2 days to decide when to go in lol.. i opted in the end for the armpit seam.. which again worked a treat ..
Have fun big hugs from London

I have only done one for my husband. And I did un due the stitches to open the tie. But I also stitched out the design on a piece of organza and cut out the diesign and then zig zagged it on the tie. I knew if I messed up I wouldn't get the stitches out and ruin the tie.

like Martine I opened the tie stitches of the back. and closed it after the embroidery by hand. hugs Gerry

Yes, I'm with Martine on that. I always undo the back seam and then stitch through the remaining layers. I don't know if it was necessary or not, but I put WSS on top, just because the tie was silk and I was afraid that it would slide around even though I pinned securely. Mine came out perfectly, so if I wasted a 4x4 piece of WSS it doesn't matter.;)

Yes snd it was a total failure and I gave up and ended up making a cushion as a gift instead

Alice I have not used a tie but I would certainly undo the seam at the back and embroider through the interlining. I personally think it would look more professional. Sarah.

That's a good question, Alice. Martine seems to have the answer though, being as she has done it before. Think I'll go play with some of Jim's ties, LOL!!!

I did a few times with existing ties and undid the back seam. It's usually handstitched together with fairly large stitches, so it becomes undone easily and can be closed up again the same way. I did stitch through the woolly looking lining. Last one was my father's tie for his 98th (and final) birthday last year.
