You can even buy a panel shaped eye spy. Put several borders around it and then quilt. I love making these for our LINUS group (children who go through a traumatic experience). You could join a quilting guild in your community and they will teach you free or at really reduced rates. Six years ago I couldn't quilt so I joined a guild and now I can do most anything. I even wound up buying the big longarm quilting machine. I still like to machine embroidery too.

Thank you, I don't know of any clubs in my community since I live in a rural area but I am going to check out the guilds on the internet. Which one did you join?? ***

I have a new quilting site that just joined the 'Embroidery Websites' listing. It is Kay Wood and she has been on numerous TV shows. You might like her work. Try these two pages.

Her link should be on one of the pages. Very nice lady.

Here are links to 2 different I-Spy quilt patterns. One is 'I Spy With a Twist' and the other is 'I Spy Alaska'.

Like some of the answers given. I have made a few quilts - by just doing, no instructions of any kind. But am going to mark this so I can check things out and maybe do a better job.
The quilt method mentioned with strips sounds like what was put on here a few days ago with the link to a utube video.
It was posted again, but here is the link. Enjoy.

Try Missouri Star Quilting. Excellent tutorials. Lots of fabric & great community (like this on Cute) to answer questions etc.

With I-Spy quilts, ANY block or quilt design can be used. The trick is to either use a lot of different fabrics OR toss in lots of embroidery. I came here as a quilter/seamstress first and am learning embroidery. The two go quite well together. Can I recommend either a 4-patch or 0-patch design as a first quilt? They look beautiful when finished, but are not real stressful to make. Another suggestion would be what my daughter makes. She sews pieces together to make strips, and then connects the strips together but does not match any of the corners, so it has a controlled scrappy look to it,without the "perfect points" dilemma. With her design, she just sews scraps together and then just trims the strips to keep them straight. It is a low stress method. If you are making a quilt for a child, they are not going to care if you spent 15 minutes or 15 hours on the block. If you want to incorporate embroidery, be sure that some of your pieces of fabric are solid or close to solid (tone on tone). Quilt with any method that suits you, and bind after you have added a back. There are no rules per se. Enjoy your project. Have fun with the process. Oh, there is a "guideline" when making quilts for children. Be sure that what ever you attach as embellishments are age appropriate. For example, buttons are not recommended for very young children. Otherwise, let your creative juices flow!!! :)

There is a good quilt forum that has excellent advice and good links to other sites.
The first to try is www. quiltedparadise.com you may have to sign up for their newsletter but it is free. The second is www.quiltingboard.com. On this one you can type in I Spy and you will probably get lots of options.
