Hello ladies, I'm new to machine embroidery. Question what is FSL and can it be used on a ball cap or quilt? I have only embroidered 2 things with my machine so I'm still new to this. Thanks.

Welcome to the Cute family. FSL means Free Standing Lace. I have never seen it embroidered on a cap. There are lace designs that are not as dense that would probably work better for you. Keep asking questions. There will always be a Cutie with an answer. And don't hesitate to try new designs.

So nice to meet you and welcome to Cute. I have never done FSL on either, but understand that doing any embroidery on ball caps is difficult and requires a big machine with a special attachment.
Sewmom's description is perfect.

Boy, have you got a lot to learn! And it's going to be so much FUN learning! We've all been there, done that.

I found this site some time ago and have come to really love it. Sorry, katydid, the only dumb question that I know of is the one un-ask. My Mom told me that years and years ago. I've told my grands and now working on my great grands. Don't hesitate to ask anything here, embroidery or anything else for that matter.

But we do need to know about the machine you have to be able to answer questions. Makes a big difference. If you want to learn to digitize you must be able to connect the machine to the puter. And that makes it all even more fun. You will be addicted in no time at all. And this site will sure help you get that way. When you get ready to do that us cuties will also help you figure out which program you want for that. I have 4 of them and don't work either one very well. But I have faith that one day.............

Good luck and happy stitching.

I have a brother se400 not a elaborate as the cuties machines I'm afraid. I was thinking of using a sticky stabilizer and hope it would stick long enough to get a design stitched. Of course I'll do a test run first on an old cap, I think you can get an attachment for $35 at amazon. Not sure I want to spend the extra $$.

FSL is free standing lace. It is done with water soluble stabilizer. The designs are digitized so that ever stitch is connected to another stitch. When you wash the finished design the stabilizer dissolves and you have lace (thread, no stabilizer).

The designs are often but not always very dense so some of them can be used as regular designs on fabric. I would test it first on a scrap.
