You should look at the Amaya by Melco. It has 16 needs and is great. Automatically controls thread feed so no tension knobs on each needle.

I have the Babylock 6 needle and love it. It has over 13 million stitches already and is also a workhorse. But I really think you need to buy a machine that has a dealer with service near you. Checjk out what the dealers have within easy driving distance from you and pick the one you like best.

My friend has a MB4, I have a Viking Diamond (only 1 needle) and thou she can whip through designs faster, she is VERY limited in hoop size. I can use much larger designs, I just have to do something else in the room while I change threads. It can be a pain in the neck to change over and over for shading, but she can't do applique easily, or ITH items that require stopping and cutting, as she has to make settings she is not familar with and is impatient with those limitations. I think I might want a multiple needle machine only if I could keep my 1 needle and not trade it in. Uses for both, Linda

I do appliques and ITH items as easily on my EP4 as on my Designer. You don't have to change settings, just take the hoop from the machine as you would on any household machine. Stitched and tested all my cutwork, applique and ITH designs on the EP4.
But you are right about hoop size, the Diamond has a larger one, 360x200 against the 300x200 the EP4 has. But I must say I hardly ever use the biggest size. I am glad I have both the 4-needle machine as well as the Designer Ruby, which I use for all those designs that use lots of colours. When in a hurry with multiple orders I use both - and the EP4 is much faster.

I have a Janome MB4 and love it. I agree with Mops, four needles is enough.

I have the Melco EP4 which is identical with the Janome 4 needle. It is a nice work horse and I love the way it stitches. I'm very happy I bought it.

I know lots of people have the Brother 6-needle and love it, and maybe some Cutie is lucky enough to own the Brother 10-needle.

I think the 6-needle is just a bit more convenient than a 4-needle one - there aren't that many designs with four colours or less. But more needles means a higher price. So compare those prices AND the maximum hoop size as well.
