Hi Soozie,
The main thing is don't give up if the first one isn't perfect! FSL is just so darn fun they should call if Fun Standing Lace! I was afraid to try it and now I am totally hooked! Be sure to post your projects! OH, a new sharp, small needle is good too. Have fun! jan

Hi Soozie, go with the advice of the others. I get my WSS by the metre from Marathon threads in Melbourne. It's a fine non-woven product, a bit like very fine vilene. I use two full pieces at opposing angles to fit the hoop, i.e. bottom east-west and top north-south, and I sandwich left-over pieces of WSS in between just the size of the design.
Everyone has their own special way of doing things and what suits you is the best way for you to go. I learnt to use three layers when I did a FSL work-along with Phil from Bargain Embroidery. It was a good introduction into the art. The resulting 4x4 squares were beautiful and held their shape perfectly. Some say it's a waste but I've never had a FSL failure yet.
Soak it in warm water to release the WSS - a shorter time if you want the finished item stiffer, as for standing angels, and overnight if you want the item softer, as in soft lacy doileys.

FSL stitching is great fun. Good luck!!!

Morning Soozie,

It's Chris from Newcastle and I recommend the same as what Shirlene says and I'd listen to her as she is a whiz when it comes to FSL (free standing lace things).
I only prefer the mesh Water Soluble Stabiliser too - and you can buy it from Spotlight or any good fabric/haberdashery store. I have the Spotlight store in Coffs Harbour address for you. Give them a call to see if they have it first!

Love and blessings Chris

Hi Soozie, not it's just a clipart design from All Glitter Graphics.com.

I love Port Macquarie and you are only 245 kilometres away - or about a 3 hour drive!!!!!!!

Australia is sure a big country, isn't it?

I knew where you lived by your profile, that's why I put the address of your closest Spotlight! Thanks for some information about yourself. It always helps to know where one lives.

Soozie, I use WSS (Water Soluable Stablizer) it is a mesh looking like stabilizer - there are many brand names - all of which are good. Two layers in the hoop and the same embroidery thread in the top and the bobbin.
