The issue of internet security is very important to every one, and I will include my experiences and what can be done, as an answer to my question.

Thanks for all the help and hints on this page folks. Can I just warn that it isn't only *db* files that can carry virus, worms, trojans etc. They can also be contained in *Word* documents, *Notepad/text* documents, *Excel* files and any other file that can contain data. So be very careful because they quite often give these files names that make them sound innocent, and sound like something that is connected to the design that you've downloaded. Hugs and flowers for you all - stay safe.

That's a very good point Ruthie and if I may add to that, this warning that UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you open .exe (executable) files unles YOU have actually downloaded a program from a site you trust, this is ESPECIALLY so if you have received it in an email, even from someone you may know as certain viruses target email address lists and will send themselves to everyone in the list, which makes the receiver think a friend has sent it, so it must be safe.

I just had some additional thoughts about the "Microsoft One Scanner." I have XP Pro on my computer, and there is a beta for Vista, but I cannot recommend this, since I have not used it. JUST BE SURE THAT THE WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM ON YOUR COMPUTER IS THE ONE REGISTERED TO THAT COMPUTER. It will check that the computer has what belongs there, which is what came with the computer, or one you bought, installed, and registered. It will not work on a computer that is not using the proper operating system. This information is all coded into your computer. I also want to state, that I told what I did and do, I am making no recommendations of what others should do. There are too many variations in systems and features installed. One needs to decide what is best for their own system.

What is a "db file"? I'm not to computer savvy. You longer people grew up with it, us senior citizens just pick up a little here and there.

a db file is a data base which means it is like a drawer in a filing cabinet. It stores all of the information about something. A list of addresses of friends is a data base. I hope that helps.

Bless you very much with this wealth of info. I never thought of deleting temp files each time I shut down, but have always kept my Microsoft Windows security up-to-date. I think that is where my probs came from too, is from "our friends", if they are to whom I think you are saying they are. I keep my virus scanner up to date too. I am kinda leary about onliner scanners, but seems you stand by this one you use as being realiable. I shall try it then. Thank you again. *'s4U

I tried to get the “Microsoft’s One Scan", but can no where. Help!

justheather by justheather 01 Apr 2008

Ok, I can't get it to run on my machine either, even though I have XP Home.

If you have a pop-up blocker, it will prevent the program from installing. If this is the case, click on the right side of the yellow bar, I can't remember if it is a right or left mouse click, but if one doesn't work, the other will. A short menu will show, click to allow activex. The program will then install. It will also not install if you do not accept the agreement.

I had to allow pop-ups to come through on this web site to vote for it. Is that dangerous also?

joaniessw by joaniessw 03 Apr 2008

OK, got it. I saw the "One Care" , but not "one Scan"... No prob. TY 4UR reply

The only bad virus I have had, a Trojan actually- really bad, came from a temp file on one of “our friends” sites. It wasn’t from a download, but from a temp file, by just being on the site. I have never gotten anything bad from an actual download. It was picked up and traced to the exact file and site by the “Microsoft One Scan.” This service will tell the exact file and site. It was too new at the time for a fix, but “Micro Trend” had one, and then I was then able to manually remove the file with the code deactivated. I now have “Micro Trend,” on my computer, and I have it set to scan zip files to four levels, and the filters set to specifically pick up sites with “bad things.” A couple of sites have set off the filters, and you know immediately, because multiple warning comes up to close the browser immediately. I then do a complete scan. I also use “Microsoft’s One Scan,” once a month, offered as a free service, to double check, and it picks up other issues like registry problems, and it fixes them. The “One Scan” service is free, but only determines an issue present at the time of use, unless you purchase it. I have a lot of “our friends,” designs, but have disposed of the zips, because they contain db files and links, and given them all complete scans, several times. I confronted him, and he claimed innocence. I am not sure how long it has been, but the site I had the problem with is gone. Due to location, it is possible he has a problem with hackers using him, but who knows. I have designs from him that go back ten years, from his original site - I really have a collection. There is no doubt a risk here, and if you want to be safe, avoid the sites and eliminate what you have. I find it difficult to believe that what I have is a problem, because I am not aware of anything that can pass all the security I have now. The “Micro Trend,” I also keep my “Microsoft Windows” security updates current, and have network security. I have been a fanatic, since the Trojan. I also make it a habit of dumping my internet temp files, before closing my browser. It is also important to be very careful where you leave personal information, and in handling e-mail. If anyone needs any technical information, post a request.
