ok you use the same thread but is there a particular type of thread. Do you use embroidery thread or regular weight sewing thread? thanks

I use embroidery thread - they do not recommend sewing thread as this could cause damage to you machine. You can use different weights, which I have done. I have done in both 40Wt and 30 Wt. But shirlener's answer explaines a lot - you see both sides, so you would want the thread to be the same.

Elaine45, if you use the same thread in the top and the bobbin - your lace will LQQk great on both sides and you will enjoy it so much better - have you ever gotten a piece of lace that it didn't LQQK the same on both sides. Use that logic when making your FSL and you will not question the why of it. You are making lace, something that will be LQQKed at, picked up, touched, adored, you want it to LQQK great at every angle. Hehehe! Have fun - POST a picture so we can see it. *4U

With most free standing lace you use the same thread on bobbin as top.
