How do you "backup" your computer files? Showing my ignorance, I know.

Is that an internal backup, or an external backup? The bad website is scary! There are so many sites out there!!

Hi Mimi, I bought a 320GB external hard drive and I use it solely for storing backups, which should be done at least twice a week. There are several ways of doing this, governed by and depending on, your operating system and how much you have on your PC. A full system backup, if you have lots of programs and data (info), can take several hours, whereas a 'User data only' backup may only take an hour or so, still depending on how much user data there is. You can set up scheduled backups to run while you are sleeping and they can be set to 'Overwrite' each other or 'Add new data to' previous backup. So, you see, any advice you need depends on which way you wish to back up. I can guide you through whichever option you choose but preferably via normal email rather than here as it would probably take several contacts. regards, Meganne (ex Microsoft sales partner and support)

mimisews2 , I just did that earlier today. What do is Go to my computer, click on C drive ( hard Drive ) click on select all ( which highlights all files ) go to send to and click on E drive ( CD ) and write to CD. I am sure there are other ways to accomplish this but this is what I do. I do this on a regular basis for safety. A flower for you.

Thank you nglover1. I think I could actually do that. Do you purchase a special cd for this? Do you overwrite each time? *2U

mimisews2, you should ask the person that you bought your PC from, to help you with that. Are you worried about just your embroidery files or everything on your PC. I see that you have answered a question here, in reverance to a your designs, do a virus check, on all your files and put them to a disk or an external drive as fast as you can. Not like it would happen tonight, but what if it did? A flower for you.

mimisews2, it depends on if you are doing an internal or external backup - whether you want to put them to disks or to your hard drive - so - can you give us a bit more info - of what you hope to accomplish with your backup? A backup will not get rid of a virus - you do know that - right? *4U

Yes, but shouldn't my virus software catch that?

I just hate the thought of losing all my designs!! I spend quite a bit of time (that I maybe should be cleaning house) collecting all these lovely free designs, and I've just begun to organize them. Don't want to lose them!

Yes, your virus softwared should do it, copy them to a disk or some how to your hard drive - but you still need something that isn't on your PC - in case something happens to your PC. OK?
