Do you know of any tricks for stopping and starting?

I don't like the method of beginning and ending on scrap peices, and then the ends are not long enough to tie the threads.
I have not had much practice and sometimes it begins to unravel.
Any tips would be much appreciated.
Thank you
From Bev

In my manual it tells you to release the tension and pull the material slowly from un der the needles. Once the threads are long enough, cut and tie at the back.

Marge - I have looked at this and I am still no wiser. What is the stitch used for?

A coverstitch machine is used mainly to overlock and hem garments all at once. Some overlocks have this function also built in, the threading is changed to allow this type of hem. It makes your hems look like store bought garments.
But the videos also show some fab ways to decorate.

With the coverstitch I always start directly on the material chosen. My machine has a trick with its balance wheel - at the end of the seam I turn the wheel manually and very slowly until I hear a first and then a second creaky noise. Then I can turn the wheel back, so that the needles are free. Then the threads are loose, so that I can cut them long enough to pull them to the left/inner side to make proper knots. If I don't make any knots at the end of a coverstitch, it unravels definitely.
But the method I use is described in my manual.
Kind regards,
Tina
