and if purchased in the states, these attachemnts are less than half price.

I have an old singer and toyota sewing machine, will the feet attachments fit on my brother. I have tried them and the needle clears when I lower it by hand, but just wanted to ask if anyone else has used feet from different make of machine on their machine, or am I foolish to try?

As for fitting the machine. I think feet are kinda universal. I think it depends on whether you have a high shank or a low shank machine. My Singer and my old Brother both had low shanks and when I sold the Brother, I kept all the feet cause they fit the singer.

I have both and I am yet to figure out how much is ruffled or pleated. In other word, do I figure 2 times or 2.5 times. My dealer did no even know. Until I figure it out, I will make the ruffle much longer and hope for the best!!!

With the pleater both the stitch length and the setting (1, 3, 6, 12) influence how many times the length of the straight piece your ruffle should be. Only thing that helps is trying it out on scraps.

To you all a HUGE thank you. I think I have grasped it now and therefore will buy both. I have to rush and cook my granddaughters tea, but later I will send flowers to you all.

This is what my ruffler/pleater foot does. This is attached to one of my granddaughters dresses so you will see a seger seam on this. My foot does not do this sort of seam, lol!
Since I do not have a gathering foot, I can not show you what the finished product looks like, sorry.

Here's a bunch of utube videos to watch to see the difference. I just learned that you can gather a piece of material while sewing it onto a straight piece. All at once! Pretty amazing.

Yes Jo. This is why I need this foot, magic aren't they.

I do have a ruffler, with 2 baby girls coming, I really do have to learn how to use it!

wishfulthinking by wishfulthinking 15 Mar 2011

well I have watched a lot of UTube vids and they seem quite easy to use. I am also interested in a gathering foot. Now I understand from watchiung vids, that they do DO similar things, I understand the difference being is this.
A ruffler/pleater will ruffle/pleat and one can adjust (as bikermomfl states further down)how often this is done. Now this is the clever bit, the ruffler will attach and sew another peice of fabric (underneath) and this will remain un rufflered. The gatherer on the other hand purely gathers and one must attach it to the desired fabric after it is gathered. At least this is what I understand. I hope this makes sense.

this isn't a brother ruffler/pleater but they are all basically the same-this shows you what it looks like on the fabric. I had one that also adjusted the different distances between the pleats.
And your gathering foot does just that-gathers-instead of having to do the basting and pulling threads gathering by hand. Don't know if that helps answer your question or not.

Hello Linda.
Thank you for your contibution. I understand the difference between a ruffler and a gathering foot. What I am slightly confused about is 'bikermomfl' reply quote..
Ok here you go, if you have a ruffler, it will gather the fabric into (no pun intended) a ruffle, if you have a pleater foot (which is the one to choose) it will do 'pleats' or folds in the fabric every stitch, every 6th stitch or every 12th stitch.
Unquote. Am I reading this incorrectly, or is there a third attachment called a pleater. I read it that a ruffle did 'X', but a pleater did 'y' and this was the one to go for. I can find a ruffler/pleater or a ruffler, but not a 'pleater'. I am confusing myself now lol

lindalee757 by lindalee757 15 Mar 2011

gizmo-looks kind of like an accordian and there is a machine that looks kind of like a pasta machine that makes the pleats-you can find those on sites like clotilde, allbrands, marthapullens-just google pleater and you can see what I mean.
But as for ruffler pleater-if you google that you will see that it is that bigger foot-it does the function all at once. ~smiles~

Yes, I have these on my watch list, but given what bikermomfl says, I am even more confused. I understand the information she has kindly supplied, but is there such a thing as a 'pleater'. When looking on EBay (the USA dot com site) they term the top picture as a 'Ruffler/pleater' and the bottom pictice as a gathering foot. I wish to make frills around the edges of alsorts of items where a frill is required, ie a pillow, apron, cuffs etc etc. Given bikermomfl terms these as individual, which one do I go for. Hmmmmm
Below I have attached a couple of links from EBay
Would you kindly take a peep and if you can tell me what the difference is between both these rufflers, apart from the fact one is £60.00 and the other £10.00.

I was unable to view your ebay listing you posted above, so I can not answer your questions according to what was shown in those picutres. However A ruffle/pleater is one foot. I think the names very depending on what part of the world you are from.

I have this (similar) for my Bernina. It is super for gathers.

mops by mops 18 Mar 2011

I have one like that for my old Elna and for my Husqvarna too. It gathers as you would do by hand and you can attach it to the piece of material at the same time by feeding that through the side opening, just like you can with the pleater. The result however looks different.

Heres what a ruffler pleater foot looks like. This picture is of a Brother Sa143 Sewing Machine Ruffler Pleater Foot. I have one for my Viking Husqvarna thay looks like this one.

I have the Husqvarna foor, looks more or less the same. I made the ruffle on the yellow dress I posted in projects a few weeks ago with this and I love the results.

for 'foor' read 'foot'

If you fabric is long enough it will look like a ruffle no matter which size you pick. You can adjust your stitch length etc. I got mine on ebay for $25, the one that goes with my designer 1 was $100! big difference and it works terrific. Hope this helps.

This is strange. I hadn't really thought about these but I too happened to be looking on e-bay today and noticed these feet as well and wondered what you would use them for and would I ever use one. Thank you wishfulthinking for asking the question and bikermomfl for letting ius know the answer. Lyn

Hello Bikermomfl. Love the cat, I have one whom look so much like that. Thank you so much for this information. Given what you have said I am slightly confused. Sewfrenzie was kind enough to post some pictures or both the ruffler and the gathering, both which I have on my EBay watch list. What is confusing me is if you have a look at the links I included to my respnse to sewfrenzie, you will notice that both these attachments look almost the same, but they are listed differently. One as a 'ruffler/pleater and the other as a 'ruffler'. You will notice that the 'ruffler/pleater' is by far more expensive that the other one. I have never seen a listing for just a pleater. But I do have a 'gathering' foot on my list. Could you tell me which one is the one you speak of as a 'pleater'. I am so sorry to be so stupid.
This is the gatherer.
