Is it allright to rewind the plactic prewound bobbins. Will the machine (Viking Hus 1) even wind the clear bobbin? Just wondering what everyone does with all the empty plactic bobbins?

I have a Janome and I have used some pre-wound bobbins when I first started but now I wind my own bobbins, there is usually less thread on it but my machine lets you wind bobbins while you are embroidering so that is what I do....to stay close and what what is happening....I never had a problem with those.......with my machine...

I too use a "SideWinder" to wind thread on them and use them on my Designer 1. When I see cracks in them, I throw them out.

I use them for my regular sewing machine. I have given bags of them to neighbors to fill for their regular sewing. They have worked fine for me.

I've been told by my dealer NOT to use them, HOWEVER, I do a lot of things my dealer tells me not to do. :-) I say give it a shot.

Well, up to now, I've thrown out the empty bobbins. After reading the posts, I might try re-using them. I've always heard the prewound bobbins have more thread on them. I'm game to give it a try.

I have read that you should not rewind them. I believe all of the Viking machines use a special bobbin. I believe one end of the opening is smaller than the other. That is why it is placed on/in with the emblem up.

I rewind the prewound plastic ones all the time - I use them for matching embroidery thread colors (that way I don't have to buy enough bobbins for all the colors I want for lace or satin edge finishing). I do wind them in my "SideWinder" - not on my machine itself.

I always throw out the empty prewound ones as they won't work on my machine to refill them.

Both my Designer 1 and my Iris don't let you fill any bobbins other than the ones that are specific for the machine (the green ones - they come in different colours now too) even the bobbins from my older Husqvarna Linea could not be filled on the newer machines although they could be used in sewing and embroidering, they just don't fit the winding axle. So I expect the empty prewounds won't fir either.

I've re-wound empty bobbins without problems. Try one.

I also have the designer 1 and only use the prewound bobbins for my embroideries. I do wind my own for sewing. I don't reuse the plastic from the disposable ones, they are usually to thin to hold. As for winding them yourself. You can get a lot more thread - therefore less stopping and winding - with the prewounds. You can always try a small order of 5 to see if you like them. As for the empties, I have 6 cats, do I need to say more! (giggle)

I have the Husqvarna Designer 1 and use clear bobbins. I re-use them all the time. I have never had any trouble.

I have never bought the pre-wound ones though so am not sure. I suppose the only thing you could do is try and see what happens.

When I wind my own bobbin thread onto the bobbin I double the thread around the litle silver circle prior to threading through the guide then onto the bobbin. I'll add a picture to show you what I mean - I've left it loose so you can see what I mean. I actually have it wound round firmly and it works really well. Love Chris

why not make garden art from them. take one bobbin and then glue a free cd disc to each side and then hang them from trees to flash and throw rainbows around when the sun catches them they also make great bird scarers.
glue three at equal distance around a cd and look you have a funky coaster.
if you have a teen who is into earings then ok cut the bobbins in half across the center spool and glue on half to the front of a blank earing shank and then glue the fastener to the other half of the bobbin. make a matching pendant.. use nail varnish and hot fix crystals to bling them up. E bay here we come.

I have not rewound bobbins for my embroidery machine because I like the prewound bobbins, I do however use the empty bobbins for my regular sewing machine. They work really well for me.

In my opinion, I dont use the prewound, I dont think it takes that much time to do it yourself. I even use my bobbins with colors instead of getting out the spool, less headache. Im not sure if you can rewind, if not there goes more plastic in the trash. Good luck from Ohio
