I don't have any experience with lace designs. Is there a difference between lace and free standing lace? Can the same design be stitched out free-standing or on fabric? Thanks!

So.... to add my little bit. Once you begin stitching lace and free standing lace you'll probably be bitten really hard. Just to sit and watch the intricate designs stitching out before your eyes is wonder enough, but the beauty of the finished items will have you hooked beyond belief. Have fun and join us on the lace and FSL trail.

Thanks for your warm welcome! And I sure do appreciate the helpful responses!!! I loved looking at Shirlene's work...very inspiring! So if it's called lace, it's not free-standing? Some time ago I purchased a lace kitty face (link attached) and wanted to use it for my g-daughter and didn't know if it should be embroidered right onto what I was making or not. Another example is the lace alphabet freebie. Thanks again for all your help!

Welcome to Cute.Shirlene has answered your question and in case you have any doubt at all she is the master of lace. I know Shirlene will not blow her own trumpet so I will post a link to her site below so you can see how amazing her talent is. I will reinforce what she has said about some FSL designs being to dense to stitch on fabric, I have digitized some free standing lace designs that are way to dense to stitch on fabric and should only be stitched on washaway so that you can rinse the stabilizer away. Have fun with lace.

Welcome to the CUTE family. As for the difference there is alot - LACE should be stitched on fabric - FSL (Free Standing Lace) should be stitched of WSS (Water Soluable Stabilizer) once it is stitched you rinse the WSS out of the design - you can stitch FSL on fabric if you prefer to. If there a design that you have in mind? Perhaps if you share a number or the designer - we could help you in your determination of whether this would work or not. There are some FSL deisgns that are very dense and stitching them on fabric might be a disaster - but you can always stitch them on WSS - rinse them and then hand or machine stitch them to your fabric.
