I did several times too, but you have to notice like mops(martine) said there can be stitches on places that were normally covered by the fabric,you have ti try to skip those stitches :)
You can embroider it, BUT there may be connecting stitches that would be covered by the applique fabric. See the picture below. Make sure there aren't and you are fine.
I have done this a number of times and they seem to be great with or without applique...Hugs Sally
It will work out fine, if the fabric that you do it on suits the pattern because that is what you see[instead of the applique fabric that you could put in]
I am planning on doing a couple of the designs on felt with out added material so it will be just the outlines and satin, I have a plan swirling in my head.
you have the answer - it would be the outlines and the satin stitch. Give it a try.
Nothing at all. You just might want to skip the 1st thread which is the fabric placement, but it isn't necessary. I have done it before and it is very close to redwork except for the satin finishing stitch.
