PES format is for Brother & Babylock machines. ART is for Bernina machines. HUS is for Viking. JEF is for Janome, etc. Each brand of embroidery machine uses a different format. If you want to be able to use larger designs, you need a machine that uses larger hoops. The new Babylock Ellisimo uses PES and will sew a design 9.25" X 14". The older machines do use smaller hoops, and some don't take USB flash drives. The newer machines use USB flash drives and will sew larger designs, they also cost a lot more. Talk to people that use different brands and see what they like the most about the machine they have.
